There is no "tax rate for bonuses."

Your income is all taxed at the applicable rate(s) for your income More gets taken out of a lump sum payment like a bonus because it appears to be a larger check knocking you into a higher tax bracket. It will even itself out when you do your taxes.

You don't get "knocked into a higher tax bracket " bc you received an extra or larger check one single time. That's a ridiculous thought. Bonuses are indeed taxed at a higher rate. Mine as a nanny are, as are my DH's much larger bonuses.

Some people are given cash, which is not taxed at all.

Seems you are a little naive to accounting. There are tables/charts / computer programs that are used - the dollar amount of the cheque is what is taxed. So it's taxed at whatever bracket it falls should you make that amount all year. It will even out when you do your taxes and you'll likely get some of that money back.

No dear, you do not get knocked into a higher tax bracket when you receive an additional check for less that a typical check would be. Bonuses are indeed taxed at a different rate. You are obviously not an accountant. Next time do a quick Google search prior to "correcting" a stranger on the internet.

NP and CPA, bonuses are not taxes at a special rate, your bonus is part of your income taxes at your overall tax rate for the year. You look a little foolish defended something you clearly don't understand.

At the end of the year, all your income is treated the same. At the time of receiving/giving a bonus check, it is indeed taxed at a specific rate, I believe 33%, refardless if your tax bracket.

From one family I got $200 , despite the fact that they took about 3 1/2 weeks off between Thanksgiving and Christmas causing me to lose over $1000 pay (they do not give me paid vacations)

From my other family I got a Starbucks gift basket from Walmart (knowing I have severe food allergies) she states, "I know you cannot eat anything in there. I hope someone in your family can- sorry."

Needless to say I don't feel very valued or appreciated along with the fact that I haven't been offered a raise for 2 years.

On top of getting the week after Christmas off (paid) I was supposed to actually work this week and got $300 cash.

I'd rather have the bonus any day. Keep the gift card, unless it's Visa, AmEx or something that can be used absolutely anywhere.

Hmm, I would have returned it to the store/online site. Or if I had no clue where my employer bought it, I would donate it to a library book sale. But that's me.
