I was with a family for 10 years and never really took vacation, but usually one or two days off for the year.
In my contract I am supposed to have 5 days seek leave and 10 days paid vacation. And if I don’t take or used the the 10 days, I would be paid for it
However since the family travelled a lot I would usually get 6 weeks of paid time off.
I think my question is I will be leaving the family in August and was wondering should I ask them to pay me for the past 10 years of vacation that I never took or should I consider the fact that I got 6 weeks paid time off when they travel even though the time off was always on their schedule and not mind.

What does your contract say?

If you had guaranteed hrs it doesn’t matter they still pay you and that doesn’t come out of your PTO

I don't think you can ask for 10 years of back pay for vacation you didn't take. That's something that should have been discussed each year.

Some companies pay out vacation time if it isn't used, but that's each year -- you can't bank it for several years (in your case, TEN) and then ask for the pay. There's a limit for how much they'll pay out. Obviously being a nanny is different from working for a large company.

You can ask for the remaining vacation time for 2025 to be paid out, but not for ten years.

Do you have a contract w/the parents OP?
If so - does it specify when you were supposed to be financially compensated for your unused vacation days??
I would think ideally at the end of each year.

Maybe your family didn’t pay you over the past ten years your paid vacation because they were hoping that you would forget that you would get them paid out if unused.
Because I doubt that during your ten years w/them they would have forgotten to pay you out all that time.

That being said - - even though you are owed the money, by this time it may be such an exorbitant amount that I doubt the family can or will financially compensate you.

Of course, in hindsight you would have been much better off having just used your vacation days but obviously that is all water under the bridge at this point.

Moving forward, you can ask them but I wouldn’t expect the full amount.
If you have a written contract then you may be able to take them to court to recover what you are owed…..if you can prove to a judge that you were never paid.
Like emails, texts, etc.

You can ask for unpaid time off for current year but not for the past 10 years - that would be ridiculous. You should have brought it up at the end of each year.

They should have paid out your vacations at the end of each year, now a decade later it is highly doubt that they will.

I would take this as a life lesson learned OP.

They should offer you a nice severance in lieu however.

If you have something tangible in hand that you are able to show them OP then you may have a chance of getting it paid out.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions/advice.
I have a signed contract that says that. However, do realize now that I should have said something maybe at the end of each year.
The parents are both lawyers so I am not sure how that will work out.
