nannies, how much you make in a nanny-share

Hi, I am about to take on 2 infants in a nanny share. It was originally not a share and we agreed on $28 per hr for one baby, and then the other family expressed interest, we interviewed and did a trial day, so we are going ahead with it. I feel like I am fine getting $42 per hr (1,5 of initial rate, and I think this is what they expect to pay), but the other part of me is wondering, would it not make me a bit cheap? I mean, they will be saving tons of money, should it not be at least $23 per hr per child? I know lots of shares make less but the job is the part of DMV where people generally get paid more.

Op here, I am in one of more expensive zipcodes , so $33 would be too low for here. I made up my mind to accept $42 as I do not want to come across as too greedy, lol

In a typical share, parents pay 2/3 of the normal rate. 3/4 tops. I don't know anyone that pays 3/4 for a nanny share. If $28 is your normal rate and the 2 families are paying you $42 together, then that's 3/4 rate. That seems fair.

because generally you don’t pay per child. You pay for the job itself. If you start a new job with one baby for $25 an hour. You can’t suddenly expect $50 an hour if they have another kid. It just doesn’t work like that.

Yes, I would also want to know what zip code are you in. I’ve lived and worked as a nanny all over DC the past 15 years and there is no way there is a neighborhood that paying that much is a “norm”. Sure, there are families who pay more but that’s not the norm. Also, high profile families use agency and those don’t do nanny shares …

PP who says the pay is for the job and not per child. Did it ever occur to you that there is twice as much work, and more, with 2 kids from different families?

Nanny agencies absolutely do nanny shares

..and the placement fee for the share is $5500 or so, which, when split between 2 families, is much lower then the single family nanny fee. More parents use agencies when you think, but they usually do not advertise the fact. Those using agencies usually pay the rate stated by OP no matter what their zip code is

DP. It is definitely more work, but PP’s point is you don’t typically get double for two babies. Parents don’t have an incentive to do a nanny share without a “discount”. If they have one infant and pay $25 for a one-on-one nanny, why would they pay that rate for a nanny tending to another infant at the same time?
