Maybe someone can help me … last year I started working with an agency as a temp. I worked for few families and made about $2500 Of course I won’t receive W2 but how can I report that income? Some families paid me cash, some thru Venmo (no more than $600 total per family). I know I can’t report it as a self employed

Yes you can under 1040 if they paid you ALL cash that’s how you failed (the reason why so many Nannies are dammed at the end of the year. Better be taxed or you end up handing out whatever cash you made—it sucks! Been there and learned my lesson.)

Nanny here- I ran into same situation and I ended up paying the IRS….

If you were a temp through an agency, the agency should be collecting the money and paying you… and you should have a 1099 as a contract worker for the agency.

This isn’t accurate. The Agency doesn’t take care of your OWN taxes. Agency is the hook between you(employee) and the employer.

I said that the agency should be collecting the money and providing a 1099. I did not say that the agency should have anything to do with the nanny’s taxes. Yes, the agency is the link between the family and the temp nanny, but a temp is a contract worker selected by the agency. I don’t know if any agencies that do the same interview process for temps that they do for summer and permanent positions. Summer and permanent positions are employee positions, and should have a W-2 from the family.

Why can’t you report it as self-employed income? Sch C and you can deduct related expenses, prorated cell phone use, car miles, etc. Down o you have any other income? You could just also report it as Other Income on Schedule 1 since it’s relatively small.

Not always true. I work for well known agency in DC and they don’t pay me. They send me job offers and if I like it I negotiate the rate directly with the family.
