Before some of you get upset, this is not for me but a former au pair who is not getting paid enough from her current family.
I know technically this isn’t legal, but what is the standard weekend rate these days. Assume Ap has reached her 45 hours by Friday at 5. And she works from that time u Tok Sunday at 5. Assume twin 4 year olds and a six year old. What is the standard rate these days ? |
If this is a former AP, she's no longer a part of the program. Therefore she's either a live-in nanny who can set her own rate, a live-out nanny who can set her own rate, or she's a sitter who may be working illegally. None of this tells us what her education or experience are, beyond her status as former AP.
For some, $10/hour is all they will command. Others will require $30/hour. |
Wrong. She is a former AP who went home and came back to the US in the program. |
I think most folks do a set amount for the weekend rather than an hourly amount. For that amount of time, I’m say maybe $400 for the weekend. But I agree with the PP - some sitters will do it for like $200 for the whole weekend, other sitters will want $500. She really should be telling you what she wants and you then decide whether you’re willing to pay it. |
One more note - that is the range of rates of US sitters. For your hypothetical, I don’t think it matters that this person is an Au pair for another family. Since she’s not your Au pair, I’d pay her standard sitter rates. If I was asking my Au pair to do an entire weekend (which as you noted is illegal), I may pay her less than the standard rates… or not… I’m not really sure what I’d do, since I wouldn’t do it! It’s against the spirit of the program and against the State Dept. rules! |
Minimum $150/night for overnight (when kids go to bed til they way up), then set hourly rate (at least $20/hour) for the daytime hours. Twin 4yos and a 6yo is not an easy gig.
Our kids are older (7, almost 10, 12) and we have done this a few times with a sitter and pay at least $500 for 2 days plus $150/night for overnights. |
If she's doing overnights when a current AP? she should turn the family in |
I charged a flat $250 per day when I did this a few years ago. So I’d charge $500 for 5pm Friday to 5pm Sunday. My hourly rate was $25. This was also for older kids that just needed some supervision and for me to drive them. |
