I feel bad but I can’t because it was last minute.

Nope. DH and I are both working. If we're working, the nanny is working. If our nanny were a POC we would pull in backup coverage and one of us would get up very early and one would stay up very late to work so we could give the nanny the day off.

No but I feel bad. Both my husband and I have the day off (long scheduled, not new), we had planned to get a bunch of errands and work around the house done.

The thing is, it's a nanny share, and I know the other family 1) has to work 2) has very stressful jobs and 3) just had to take a lot of time off for a family emergency. So it just feels like a huge imposition for them.

But I have guilt, especially because both families are white and the nanny is Black.

Yes but just coincidentally. Next year we will.

You may want to start looking for a new nanny now.

PP here. It's as bad as I think, huh? I'm going to reach out to the other family at least, see what they say. If it was just us, we'd for sure give the day off...

Why don't you just take the other kid? One parent can run the errands, and the other can watch both kids?

No, nanny already gets 15 paid holidays a year.

Yes reach out and see if they could swing the day, if they can’t at least try to give a small bonus/thank you

We've reached out and volunteered to watch their kid too. We'll see what they say. A bonus is a really good idea if we can't make it work, thanks!

For those of you who identified as people of color and your nanny is as well, are you giving it off?

I am an African American female. I definitely would not start looking for a new job because my employer’s could not give me the day off with less than 24 hours notice - that just seems extremely silly. There are a ton of great Juneteenth activities/ celebrations on Saturday that lots of people are going to because they do not get tomorrow off.

A nice card (you can download some neat ones from Etsy) to celebrate the day would be nice, and if you want, a gift card to a place to help me celebrate (there is a new African American owned bookstore in Downtown Silver Spring right next to ColdStone - Loyalty books, that’s really neat.

We gave it off. It’s a mess as we both still have to work but we will manage.

We offered her to either take it off or have another paid day off of her choosing. She picked to take another day.
