New host family, what to do about arrival? RSS feed

Our AP will be coming from Mexico and I’m trying to figure out how to handle her arrival. We are pretty cautious about Covid. We could stay at my in laws while she stays at our house? But I feel like that might be strange for her? What have others done when bringing an AP over during Covid?

First, this should have been discussed during matching. Second, you need to do what you need to do to stay safe so just go wth that.

What other families have done is put au pairs in Airbnb, I know two families who got together and had their au pairs stay in an airbnb together. Good luck!

I'd let her stay at your house but ask her to wear a mask at all times (except in her room).

We put her up in an AirBnb for a few days and then had her wear a mask in the house until she got her negative Covid test.

We had her stay at our house in her room or bathroom only for 5 days and then tested her. Stocked her room with snacks and treats, brought up 3 meals a day after placed by the door, microwave and mini fridge in her room, was too cold/snowy to do outdoor walks but the kids made her notes and cards and talked to her through the 2 floor bedroom window. Not ideal but the best we could do. It went fast actually.

after seeing so many hfs post to the effect of "pick us, we are wonderful and we don't have any covid restrictions". it is nice to see your approach.

(family two post up with au pair in room) I didn't want to pay for hotel or air bnb either, nope, not us!

we did one week in an air bnb and then got negative test. One week quarantined in our house in her room and brought her meals and got a second COVID negative test. IT cost a lot (she arrived at end of 10/20) but we felt safe that way. We were letting her be in the house with no mask. When she started sitting in other au pair's cars with the windows shut, we switched and make her wear a mask in our house. Daughter is high-risk (immuno-compromised).

Oh wow, I would have that stop in a heart beat. We said no to cars with others, you can't be six feet apart!

Creepy. Should have got an air bnb.

Did she say it went fast? I'd go crazy being locked up like that especially in a new room. I guess you can read and use the internet?

so are you all paying for the APs time in quarantine or is that coming out of her vacay?
Anonymous
Of course paying for quarantine time. If you are thinking of making her use vacation for that, I think probably you shouldnt host - that would be a totally cruddy way to start your relationship.

We did almost the same plan as the in-house quarantine poster above. She arrived on Wednesday. I bought a mini-fridge and microwave from Amazon (easy delivery!): and stocked her room with oranges / apples / grapes / and strawberries, croissants, lunch meat and bread, Oreos, almond milk, cereal, some frozen meals, etc, and paper plates, forks/knives/spoons etc.. I also brought her dinner meals each night.

I made sure that her Apple TV has all of the apps (Disney, HBO, etc), and as part of her welcome gift bought her a yoga mat, and weights from Target.

Lastly Peloton is running a free 90 day promotion, so I loaded that on to Apple TV as well.

The weather was decent, so I told her to feel free to walk around the neighborhood (with a mask on), and to our local grocery store.

We went to a MoCo county drive-up test center on Tuesday, and had her results by Thursday afternoon.

It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be, and she said it felt like a little vacation for her.

And you absolutely, 100% CAN NOT take this time from their vacation - ugh!
