Nannies eligible for Unemployment? RSS feed

Anonymous
We are paying our nanny to stay home right now, out of an abundance of caution. My husband’s question is, can she claim unemployment at this time? What would cause that to go into effect and what should we be considering? We are not going to cut her off financially, but we’ve been paying unemployment taxes for her for four years and are curious.

Anyone a tax/benefit expert? We’re in Northern Virginia and use Nannychex for pay/taxes.

Yes, of course, a nanny being paid legally can get unemployment.

Ok, but how would it work in practice? And is anyone else going this route with your nanny? Thanks-

It works the same as anyone else laid off during this crisis.

It works like anyone else filing for unemployment. It’s certainly not going to be her full salary.

And no, we are not going to lay off our nanny.

We are down one income and we asked the nanny to file unemployment after giving her a generous severance.
Through the stimulus package unemployment checks should be higher than usual right now

If she’s receiving income, she cannot file for unemployment.

Exactly, she needs to be later off... pls, if you can’t afford paying your nanny, pay her off so she can get unemployment and find a new job.

How to you employ your nanny and use unemployment at the same time? I feel like a zombie virus is going around
Some things people have been saying here lately....

A reduction in hours makes a worker eligible for unemployment. If nanny typically works 50 hours but is reduced to 25, she’s still employed while also eligible.

I didnt know that!!! I guess it never happened to me before
I always thought you have to be terminated to be able to apply for unemployment?
And that’s what I just read online ....
Curious to see what others say
Sorry if I’m wrong

Rather than waiting for others to chime in, why not try googling partial unemployment, unemployment when hours are reduced or unemployment when hours are cut. Better yet, add in your state for results more relevant to you.

You can fire or furlough your nanny but you CANNOT pay them if they are receiving unemployment.

Ignoring the immaturity of the pre ending conversation, it is not clear. In MD you can collect unemployment when hours are reduced or when in furlough status. These are real considerations for employers who are committed to their caregivers but do not have the resources to pay for weeks on end for work that is not performed.
