VA FAMILIES ** Can you ask your au pairs to write short letters of support for the program? RSS feed

VA FAMILIES ** Can you ask your au pairs (current or past) to write short letters of support for the program? They can mention what it has meant to them, what they have enjoyed, learned, etc. I want to start collecting local stories to share with legislators and likely the Governor's office. Ask them to include their name, host hometown and years as an au pair. Please also share with your local coordinators and see if they will share in their groups for those not on on FB. Please email to: SaveTheAuPairProgramVA@outlook.com

Is there any legal representation for the au pairs in this process to answer their questions about the new legislation?

No. And many will be sent home if it passes.

Many already are getting sent home for reasons that are not their fault.

Why aren’t the au pairs having legal representation in this process? You want to collect AP notes to support the current system, but what about notes to share the abuses?

Where is the fairness here?

The families don't have legal representation. It's called grassroots lobbying.

Because this process is not one that requires legal representation. This is a bill working it's way through the VA legislature. If APs want to write to various delegates and senators to express their support or concerns, they can do so in the same manner as host families.

You all are not on any of the AP facebook groups are you? LOL! They are pretty excited about this. I do not think the ones who work full time hours are realizing they might be going home, but none the less they see this as a good thing. Good luck getting an AuPair to write a letter against making $10/hr.

Who said they couldn't do this? They can write letters in support or not in support. This is a HOST PARENT FORUM, of course you will see post SUPPORTING the program. Go to a different forum if you want to rally up the APs that think it is a bad program.

Just ask them to reach out to APs in Massachusetts and see if they're happy about what happened. Oh wait they can't because many of them are already home or in other states due to rematch making the same amount of money. And I believe only one agency is even still operating in that state and they are not making new placements at the moment until the dust settles and it becomes clear how this is actually getting enforced. My AP and her friends also thought this sounded great till I actually explained that if they work parttime, they'll make about the same. If they work full-time, it will now cost host families more to employ them then a live-out nanny, so the likelihood of a family sticking with the program is slim to none. So it is not good at all. And if you take a moment to explain that, they understand it pretty quickly.

Correction, PP,
This is an “Au Pair Discussion” forum. What makes you believe this forum is only for “host parents”?

Of course anyone can post here, but it's hard to imagine why people would come to a forum for parents unless you were expecting it to be mostly parents.

You don’t think you should have to pay them a fair wage and you think this is acceptable? Amazing.

Writing letters for causes the HMs support is part of the cultural exchange. Any AP with a good attitude should be grateful to be here working only 45 hours at most,

The families most likely to drop out are the types who max hours and look for ways around the current rules. (“If they go shopping with us on their off hours, they need to care for the kids then too .” APs are well aware.

But take a moment to pressure them, and maybe they’ll give in.
