What's your opinion on this compensation package for a nanny for one baby (under 1 year old) in northern Virginia? We're looking for at least a high school education and several years of experience.
$20 per hour, with 1.5x for overtime, but overtime will be rare. This will be pre-tax but excluding employer taxes. There will also be 10 paid vacation days and 10 paid holidays. There will be no non-child-related cleaning and meal-prep responsibilities. Is it high, is it low? How much of an annual bonus should we give? How much of a raise do we give each year? How much would we up the pay to share the nanny with another family? How much would we up to the pay if we were to have a second child? |
$20/hr might be great for a young person with minimal experience. The benefits aren’t great either. Nothing stands out. |
There is only one way to find out - advertise the job and see how you feel about the pool of candidates who respond. Your rate is neither too high nor too low. My sense is you'll be able to find someone suitable. |
Don't have a lot of experience with NoVa prices but in terms of bonus, standard is usually 1-2 weeks of pay. Annual raise of $0.50-$1. When we added a second kid, we heard $1-$2 was the norm but we upped it $5/hour. We also contribute to her health insurance. Shares are usually a few more dollars on the hourly rate, but then split by 2 assuming both kids are in it full time. You each should handle your own payroll/taxes/bonuses etc. in that scenario. |
+1. But nothing awful either. |
Just average, but what parent wants average childcare? |
We started our amazing nanny at $20/hour almost exactly 3 years ago. We couldn't ask for a better nanny. We trust her judgment in making decisions independently, she is a safe driver, an excellent communicator, and is spectacular with our children, who adore her. We never asked her to perform additional duties, but if she sees something around the house that needs to be taken care of, she takes the initiative to get it done.
We have given a 5% raise each year, 2 weeks' pay at the end of each year, and smaller bonuses here and there. You'll be able to find someone great, OP -- especially since you have a baby (most nannies prefer to start with a family when they have one child who is a baby, for longevity and other reasons). --former nanny, current MB |
