Appropriate pay for 7-8 am drive to school RSS feed

Anonymous
I am using a neighbors nanny to drive my kids to school. Before she starts her job with the neighbor. She will be with us for an hour, about 15 minutes of that is driving. Two days a week.
What’s appropriate pay?

I think $20 per hour is average for this sort of thing.

For only one hour? To make it worth it it would need to be at least $35-$40 per trip + reimbursement for mileage and gas.

You are nuts.

OP Assuming she is going straight from your house to the neighbors after her hour with your kids, I think $20 an hour is good.

Perhaps you missed that this is OP's neighbor's nanny so she is able to immediately go to her full time job right in the same neighborhood.

I suggest asking the nanny. I don’t care where my next position for the day is. My rate is MUCH higher for an hour or two than for full day. Normally, I don’t agree to a single hour, and your situation is probably the only way I would. But where I may charge your neighbor $20-23/hour for 6+ hours per day, you’ll be paying mileage and $25+ for such a short shift. Or it’s not worth my sleep and the inability to use that time for myself.

I agree with PP. You're basically asking someone to commit to only two hours per week for one hour at a time. That would be higher than my normal rate. Additionally, if this nanny really needs the money, then there's nothing stopping her from looking for a position that needs someone to drive kids every morning (giving her 5+ hours before her FT job). So yeah, $20/hr is too low for this.

Is that what you get? Seems really low.

Where do you live?
In DC - $25.
In closer in suburbs - $20.
In further out suburbs - $15-18.
