Ugh!
Half vent, half advice needed here. I was recently hired for a full-time Nanny position. Last Wednesday was my first day. Everything went perfect & I was looking forward to starting my first full week with my new family. ![]() Then last night, my car broke down. My mechanic shop is closed today (Sunday) so the earliest I can have my car looked at is tomorrow. I texted my new MomBoss + explained the situation. She is an Elementary School teacher and tomorrow is her first in-class day. Plus she doesn’t have a back-up childcare plan in place yet. So I HAVE to be there. Why oh why does something like this have to occur so early into my new job??! Argh!!!! ![]() My question for everyone, did I already make a bad impression on my new Nanny family? Having car issues on my second week in? Thx. |
It depends. What did your message say?
Texting to say that your car broke down so you will be taking the bus or an Uber to work and so will do walking activities with the kids instead of driving activities? That shows problem solving and initiative. Texting that your car broke down so can you come to work late because your preferred mechanic isn’t open sundays? That shows that you plan to make your problems her problems. |
Yes. You are undoubtedly making a bad impression.
You should have handled this issue on your own - get a rental car, borrow a car, Uber - whatever without involving your new employer. You made a mistake, OP. Now you have to prove yourself and learn from your mistake. Be great at your job. |
Yeah, you made a really bad impression. Why did you have to tell your boss that your car broke down ?!! |
Yes you did leave a bad impression. Do you need to drive for the job ? If so get a rental car . If not Uber to work on Monday . |
Tip: don't ever present a problem to your boss without also presenting a solution to it.
What was your purpose in telling your boss you have a car problem? I mean, you might as well have told her you just got your period. How does this affect her? Are you planning to get to work late? Do you want to borrow her car? What? |
Yeah, OP, you made a really bad impression on your new employer. I echo the above - you should have quietly handled the situation yourself.
I hate to say it but you have to grow up. Your car problems are YOUR problems. Your employer isn’t your mother or your friend. Make it right, OP. Apologize for texting her and do an amazing job tomorrow and all week. Don’t do something this childish again. |
A good employer will fully understand that life happens.
You can get hired for a new job, then wake up with a horrible flu on your first day of work. Or your dog may be ill and need to go to the vet clinic ASAP. Or your car suddenly decides to go kaput. Ask anyone. We have all been in scenarios such as these - or similar. Including your new employer. Ask for the day off, use it to have your car repaired. The fact that you will be losing a whole days salary shows just how dire your situation is. |
In less you needed picked up at the metro, this isn't something you discuss with your boss and make alternative transportation arrangements. She hired you as her plan. She should not need back up care. |
You truly could not be more wrong. Dead wrong. And ridiculous. |
Ask for the day off?! OP explained her boss is a teacher and tomorrow is her first day of school!! What is wrong with you, PP? Yes, shit happens but you have to learn to handle your shit like an adult!! God, some of you are such children. And I am a nanny (just not a foolish child). |
Op, honestly I wouldn’t have spoke to your boss about your car until the end of your work shift. I would have arrived to work using the metro or car service and then when she got home (or dad) tell them about your car situation. You could have said something like:
Hey, so I didn’t want to miss my first day but my car broke down. I wanted to see if we could work together on a plan that maybe I could come in a hour later on Wednesday, so I can drop my car off in the morning and that way (god willing) it will be ready for pickup over the weekend. You would just have to pay to get to and from work or you may have gotten lucky and they would offer to pay or split the bill for using public transportation thanks to you trying to do whatever you could to not miss work. This is a learning lesson and don’t feel bad. Talk to your boss tomorrow and just say I didn’t mean to put you in a panic (if I did) about not having child care, I was just trying to get my car fix ASAP so that I wouldn’t inconvenience you guys- then maybe (if it works for you) tell her something on the lines of what I said above. |
Teachers cannot be an hour late or have flexibility. |
This. |
