So for the first time, I am trying to choose between two amazing candidates.

Candidate A seems very fun loving and has great experience. She seems like someone who will be resourceful and is excited about finding her way around dc. In the call with my kids, she seemed a little timid. She did try to engage, but not super persistent. To be fair, the kids were really not in a super engaging mood (ages 3 and 5)

Candidate B also is great with kids. We feel as the adults that we connect more. In the call with my kids, she was more steady under pressure. To be fair, they were calmer.

Any thoughts? How have you decided between two fantastic candidates. I wish I could pick both. Thanks

If they’re both good with kids then go with who you would actually want to share your home with

Candidate B. She sounds grounded and mature, and that will make a big difference for you and your very young children.

If both fit your childcare needs go for who you think will be the better roommate.

But goodness did I always find it difficult to keep children that young "engaged" on the phone or on skype or facetime or whatever. Heck, I can barely keep my own nephew (4) engaged while talking to him and I have known him since he was born.

The video call with the kids doesn't tell you much. All I expect is that AP tries to engage, rather than look blankly at them.

Go with the type of AP you want in your home. A sounds like she'll find friends and be out a lot more. B sounds like you'll have a good relationship with them. Which do you value more?

I'd go with #1 since she sounds more likely to make friends easily and to spend have fun spending times traveling and with friends during her year here. Getting along with your AP is good, but honestly the less time they spend hanging around the house with you in their off hours, the happier everyone will be.
