How easy is it to get a summer au pair (perhaps some one in between au pair jobs or at the end of their au pair contract).
Can one get an au pair for the summer only? What is the process like and costs?

Summer only was discontinued several years ago.

Login into culturacare around the summer and try to find an AP who is in rematch and only have 3 months left. There is a good chance you will find one but you never know. Also they usually prorate the fees on what is left on the AP Visa + processing fees (around $300), so it will come o around $1700-$1800/month for the 3 months.
Good luck!

Very risky to match with an AP in rematch with three months to go. If a host family rematches In this situation, it must be pretty bad. And you can’t pick until just a few weeks before you need an AP.

But maybe you will be lucky. Good luck.

An alternative: One year, our AP needed to leave early due to homesickness. We got a live-in college-aged summer nanny to fill the gap, until we could match with a new EOC AP for late summer. The summer nanny "felt" a lot like having an AP, except she had her own car, spoke perfect English, and spent her free time during the week at church and visiting her family (2.5 hours away) on weekends. Very nice girl, no drama. Of course, we lucked out, but summer nannies abound.

I am the PP who suggested a 3 month rematch. Keep in mind that the rematch can be initiated by AP as well for many reasons.
At some point i was looking for a 3 months AP and cacao had a good pool. I ended up getting a 6 month extension ap though.

Yea, great idea, pick up some disaster sloppy seconds. Only a complete trainwreck gets let go with only 3 mos left at summer.

Not always.
Mom could get pregnant and AP is not IQ
Mom got laid off and now is staying home for the summer
Family going on extended vacation for summer and don't need AP.

OP...register at a couple different ones to open up your maximum pool of candidates and interview carefully.

I took a rematch who was worked to death by her family...

+1, there are many reasons an AP finds themselves available through no fault of their own. One our best APs only had a few months left in the program, she was trying to stick it out with a crappy HF that finally pulled the plug. We were so lucky to get her.
