Dental Care for APs? RSS feed

Does anyone have any experience with getting their au pairs affordable dental care while here? My current one is complaining of tooth pain & sensitivity and says she can see a cavity (I'm not sure I believe that part, but anyway...).

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,
Hilary

Hi Hilary,

My understanding is that APs do not have a dental coverage. Our AP needed a root canal and she had to pay for it out of pocket. Please reach out to your LCC. She may have some resources.

Good luck!

Ours too, no coverage, out of pocket and expensive. Luckily, her family had the money and she got it taken care of here. She later told me it would have been cheaper to fly home and get it done.

Check out Groupon for cheap deals (exam, cleaning and xrays). Then she can see what is going on at least. ...like for $50!

A single silver amalgam filling out of pocket probably won't be more than $200.

She could go to a dental school and find it cheaper. But get an exam and try sensitive toothpaste first. Floss too!!!

Our AP got the upgraded insurance and they cover emergency dental. They said this would be coverage, but we're still waiting for the check. Only up to $500 though. We ended up paying all up front. We had a pretty extensive root canal, but for more basic fixes I recommended dental schools. We would go to Uni of MD.

We have a good relationship with our dentist, a solo practitioner. We spoke with him, and he did some work for our AP at a discounted rate.

We did something similar (a local dentist had a "new patient special" so no Groupon was needed) to see what was going on. They recommended two root canals and crowns for something like $4000.

A plane ticket to Poland (her home country) was about $500.

We are lucky to be able to pull in grandparents from another part of the country for short term stints. She went home to have the dental work done for next to free. Plus she got to bring a load of "stuff" with her that she didn't have to deal with at the end of the year.
