Community appreciation for nannies and caregivers

I am a SAHM who is part of a large, active mom's group. Every year, our group does a big event for kids at Easter. We have an egg roll, bring in a small petting zoo, etc. It's basically a big carnival for littles. Most of the women in the group are upper-middle class and white and they work outside the home.

Our group is currently brainstorming ways to make this event more inclusive of the variety of parents and kids in our community. Because I spend most of my days with nannies, I have suggested that we find a way to use this event to recognize the contributions of our family caregivers. At the very least, I think we should invite nannies to bring their own kids for a day of fun. It also seems like it would be nice to recognize, as a community and not just individual parents, the work and contributions of our nannies.

As nannies, would this be of interest to you? What kind of recognition would be meaningful?

I think this is a great idea! Just this past week, my 5 yr old charge was talking about a Grandparents Luncheon at his school and asked when Nanny Day was. I have been with my charge (and now his baby sister) since he was born.

I would love to have something like this to celebrate our wonderful nanny.

1. Many nannies don’t have kids.
2. Most nannies don’t work weekends.
3. Most nannies won’t want to give up weekend time without being paid.
4. Have you considered the jealousy caused by nannies’ kids and charges being in the same place? Unless they usually are together, both will feel territorial.

Nannies like gifts and money not hanging out with nanny family on weekends at an event. You must be bored.

Speak for yourself. I would love to be recognized and spend time with my employers and charges with my DH and grown kids.
