Just found out my job of 4 years is ending this summer. Of course my boss said I could use her as a reference, but I am wondering should I ask her to write up a reference letter? How exactly does that work? I've only ever had references available by phone before. Is the letter instead of a phone call? How does the family know it's legit and I didn't just write it myself? Do I ask her to make copies and seal them in envelopes? Thanks for any advice you can provide.

When you ask for a written letter make sure your employers list down their emails and phone numbers. That way potential employers have the option to contact your previous employers

My former DB printed, signed, then scanned his letter. That way I can send it electronically, without worrying about needing more copies/signatures. He’s also happy to email, Facetime, Skype or take calls.

OP here, thanks I like this idea. Maybe I will suggest it to my boss.

Is providing email addresses for references the norm these days? I haven't interviewed in over 4 years but only ever shared phone numbers.

I just typed my letter and emailed it to my nanny. It has my contact information on it, so they can reach me to verify it all.

That DB is happy to do whatever is most convenient for the person calling him. I have two other families who require an email or text to schedule a call first, due to their professions/schedules.

MB here. I don't pay much attention to reference letters - I want to speak with references directly. So it's a nice add on but in no way a substitute for speaking with a former employer.

OP here. Well glad some people said they don’t think it’s needed because when I asked my MB she said she is too busy and to just have people call her ?
