Family in denial RSS feed

I’ve been with my NF for a year now. I started at 53 hours a week. They asked me 6 months ago if I could help by staying late once in awhile while they searched for an evening sitter and I said ok. They kept pushing the hire back and It’s now 6 months later and I’m working over 53, usually close to 59 hours every week. I’m paid for it but I ultimately want to work less. It’s different every week and they have a bad habit of changing things last minute so I can never make advanced plans after work. Or they’ll tell me I’m off completely and then nonchalantly take it back. They’re already in denial about how much childcare they want and now MB will have a second baby in May. We had talked about me reducing my hours to 40ish a week I’m January and it’s now December with no plan laid out.

I’d rather not quit but I feel like I should because ultimately our needs aren’t compatible. How much notice would you give?

Ask them again about finding a babysitter for nights/evenings. Offer to help them find one. Of course you could always quit but most nannies work 50 hours a week (to cover the 8 hours the parents work plus commuting time) and want a date night or two so you would have to choose your next employers carefully.

Bring them a plan and help them implement it. That could be finding someone for occasional sitting, but I would suggest instead that you help them find someone for one full day a week while you keep the rest of the week at closer to 40/45 hours.

If you are (appropriately and professionally) honest with them that you think perhaps you need to find another position they may wise up and actually do something.
