Part time nanny pay- Falls Church RSS feed

I'm looking for a little guidance with nanny pay and responsibilities. My husband and I are looking for a part time nanny (hours would range from 12-36/week) for our 8 month old. Part of her responsibilities would also include drop off and pick up of our two older children that attend preschool. What would be a reasonable pay for this. I understand pay is variable depending on location, taxes, experience, qualifications. Also- what would be a reasonable proposal for pay? Pay hourly for every hour worked or pay a guaranteed pay each week ? If nanny exceeds this set guaranteed pay do you pay for the extra hours even if they do not exceed 40 hours/overtime? We are new to this and we are trying to find the right proposal to entice people without breaking our budget!

You pay HOURLY and have set guaranteed hours each week. For example, Monday and Friday: Nanny is contracted to work 3PM to 7PM; Tuesday and Thursday: 12PM to 7PM. If some days you do not need her - you still have to pay her. You have guaranteed that she will remain available and able to work those days. Any additional hours are by mutual consent and nanny can say yes or no and are not guaranteed.

Salary always depends on the nanny's education and experience. Part-time is more expensive per hour than full time and hourly rate is always contingent on how many kids the nanny will be responsible for caring for (makes no difference is the kid is in school or not - three kids is three kids - since the nanny will be responsible for three kids on holidays, sick days, etc and have three kids worth of laundry).

Legally, all nannies/babysitters must be paid hourly. You guarantee the hours not the pay.

Nannies are always paid hourly. You have to decide exactly which hours and which days you will need her and put those hours in writing.

I would guess between $25 and $30 an hour. Maybe less with less experience.

Hours cannot "range", OP. You need to set specific hours on specific days to get any one halfway decent.

Thank you for the replies! Due to my schedule I do not work consistent days throughout the week and I work varied shifts per week. That is the nature of emergency medicine. That is why we do not have "set" days. I do get my schedule 3 months in advance so I would have those days laid out ahead of time. My schedule is what complicates this process! Unfortunately, we do not have the abilities to host an au pair which would probably be our best option!

You would do best to get a full time nanny - pay for a full 40 hours Monday through Friday - and then set her varied schedule for the three months. When you are home and don't need her, your nanny can do anything and everything for the children and even run errands for the household (imagine never being out of milk or diapers again! Someone to get the strap on the bike helmet repaired and pick up a gift for the upcoming party, etc...)

You pay so much more for part time than full time that it might end up being the same cost.

Rare is the nanny who can work either 8 or 36 hours a week depending on your schedule and still pay her bills.

I am assuming your husband works a set schedule?

By that I mean typical - Monday thru Friday, 9 to 5?

Yes, husband does work set schedule 7am-4am. He occasionally travels but we have a wonderful back up sitter that is usually available if that is the case.

How would I be able to compare full time salary vs hourly part time? Any good sites to compare?

There is no salary for a nanny - all nannies are hourly employees so please stop saying "salary".

Compare hourly wages and then multiply.

I apologize- I did not mean to offend anyone with my terminology. I'm just trying to understand this all. Thank you for all of your input and patience

If you want coverage for 7AM to 4PM, M-F, whether you need it or not, you are looking at 45 hours a week. I would recommend getting it down to under 40 a week. You could probably find a good and loving foreign nanny for $20 an hour (maybe?) costing you $800 a week and paid in cash. Three kids is expensive, OP.
