I got an offer from a family I like. They are offering good benefits but the pay isn't that good. They are offering $17 per hour gross for 50 hours per week. I told them I am used to a net pay and OT. They said they structured in OT ( $14 * 40 + 1.5 * 10 = $17). I explained that's way too low. They think because they're are offering guaranteed hours and 52 weeks salary it will offset the lower pay. Would you accept this offer? I am new to the area but heard this is too low.

You don't say what area OP, but in Montgomery County (outside DC) that's a very standard offer. And it sounds like they know how to calculate the OT and hours so they have a clue what they're doing.

You could try to negotiate for a starting hourly rate of $15 or 16/hr, and then use that as the base for the gross calculation if you like.

But $850/week for 50 hours, with a good benefits package, is not out of the range of market. On the low end perhaps - but not crazy low, and especially not if they're not requiring anything special, have multiples, odd hours, etc...

Op here. It's $17 gross. I would be fine if it was net. They live in Chevy Chase. I have over 10 years experience and a childcare degree. They want basic care for their infant plus their errands and their laundry in addition to baby housekeeping.

Anyone?

What are the benefits? Is the health insurance good? Dental?
Paid days off?

I agree the hourly doesn't sound amazing on it's own but it does seem like they're trying to do right by you.

Is this for one kid? Do you mean 14x40 + 14*1.5*10? If so that is good pay!

That's 39K per year gross, around 31K net. How are the other benefits?

Op here. Benefits are 2 weeks paid vacation, major holidays, and 5 sick days. No health insurance.

No *10 at the end. I will be making $570 per week after taxes.

Absolutely not, get something else better.

I'm not really understanding your / their math. It sounds like you're getting an offer for less than $14/ hour?

17/hr gross for 50 hours is great for 1 kid, and good for 2 kids if one is in preschool 3 hours a day. I assume this is W-2? If cash, it's very good.

50 hour a week will get you significant money at this rate. don't confuse part-time rates with full-time rates.

and yes, that is how everyone structures "OT."

$17hour gross for ONE INFANT is high end of market. The market sets the pay ranges, not your personal budget wishes.
If you need more income, run a nanny share or patch together a bunch of higher rate part-time gigs.

+1. Math is off in your posts.

If you're getting $17 blended rate (which considers 40 hours at regular rate and 10 hours at OT rate), for a total of $850/week ($17 x 50 = $850), it means they're paying you a base rate of $15.45/40 hours and an OT rate of $23.175/10 hours.

$15.45 x 40 hours = $618.18
$15.45 x 1.5 OT rate = $23.175 x 10 hours = $231.75
$618.18 + $231.75 = $849.75
