Do I need to make a call to CPS? RSS feed

I started a new position on Monday with three adopted children ages 7, 8, and 9. I did not see the children's bedrooms during my interview. I have discovered rotten food, maggots, dirty dishes, mold, fecal matter on walls, and used diapers on the floor. The 9 year old was born addicted to drugs and has various issues, so he still uses a diaper at night. His underwear have actual feces in them (not skid marks). I asked MB if I could give her a hand bathing the children (they smell) and she said they only bathe every 4 days or so! On top of that, her and DB live separately because he has dementia and had become verbally abusive to her and their oldest daughter (15). He apparently called MB and the daughter whores and slurs. She claims it was never sexual or physical, but I am not sure I believe. All of the children still wet the bed multiple times a week. He also comes over unannounced and demands things from me such as warming up his coffee. He even showed up today and tried to take the kids to his place! Mb told me he would not be around, but he has been at the home every day this week. How do I quit professionally and do need to call CPS? I truly feel sorry for the kids. I thourghly cleaned and disinfected all three of their rooms. I could not stand the fact that they were living in such filth. I would hate to tear a family apart, but it's so unsafe and unsanitary.

Yes, call CPS. Don't worry about quitting professionally. This woman is not reliable as a reference anyway.

yes, you are morally and legally obligated to. nannies are mandated reporters of even suspected child abuse-you could be held legally responsible for failing to do so. it is also your duty as a human being to advocate for those who cannot be an advocate for themselves.

Call and get out of this hell hole immediately!

Yes, please call. Those poor children!

And quit immediately, OP - don't go back there. The father sounds mentally unstable and dangerous.

Did you take pictures before you cleaned?

Is this a troll post? What person in their right mind (nanny or not) could see maggots and fecal matter in the room and not immediately call CPS? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Please call CPS. Re-read your OP, it's obvious you know what the right answer is: by your own account the children are living in filth, failing to thrive, and being abused (you think even sexually) by a man who should not be in the house but shows up unannounced. This is not a job for a Super Nanny, this is a job for the police.

OP, you are a mandated reporter. Part of being a nanny is stepping up when situations like this arise. You are not responsible for "saving" these kids or fixing their life, but you are required to report what you saw. That is the best way to help them.

Dial up.

The bathing every 4 days is not necessarily an issue. Some kids have very sensitive skin and are better off bathing less frequently and just spot washing in between, but the kids obviously need more frequbent baths if there is odor or bathroom issues.

The rest of it requires that you Call cps asap.

So what did you do, OP?
