How many weeks of notice to give nanny? RSS feed

Nanny is fine, but we unexpectedly have to put the child in daycare instead due to reasons unrelated to the nanny. There was no contract when we got the nanny, just minimum hours and rates talk which has been fine so far. We are both flexible types. Would 4 weeks notice be enough? We would try to help her find a new position and give great references.

Op here. What would be nice to give on top of notice? Something like an extra 1-2 weeks of pay?

That is fine two weeks pay and four weeks notice.

I think that 4 weeks notice and 2 weeks pay is very thoughtful and generous of you OP. It can take a while to find the right fit with a family. How long has she been with you? That will affect the answers you get.

I think 4 weeks is fine. I am a Nanny and I wouldnt expect more than that.

Four weeks notice & two weeks of severance pay sounds great along w/providing a good reference for her.

I'm in a similar situation but worried about giving notice at all. What if nanny quits? And do you really want someone taking care of your kid who you have just fired?-

If we didn't give notice, we would give severance in lieu of notice, so that would give the nanny some income while looking for another job (but not the 6 weeks OP is thinking of).

Nonsense. Do you seriously think she will suddenly care less for our child because her job is ending? All nanny jobs end. Not giving notice is just shitty - notice gives the nanny a change to wind down the relationship with your child, gather her things in an orderly fashion and say a proper good bye to your child.

to OP - 4 wees notice is good.

I am a nanny. First week of May my MB gave me 2 weeks notice and 1 week of severance pay. She told me I dont have to come to work the following week since she'll be busy training her new nanny. Know what? I quit!

Yours is a very different situation than either PP. You got fired and replaced, PP - not let go because the child went to school or daycare.

It is ridiculous to think that your nanny would be less than to your child because you gave her notice. And it is doubtful that she would find another job where she would need to start immediately and leave you before the end of four weeks.

I'm confused. If you got 2 weeks pay if you work it plus promise of 1 week severance. That's 3 weeks pay to find a new job. If people are saying 4 weeks notice is sufficient, even generous, why was your 3 weeks something to quit over? Didn't you just give up that 3 weeks pay? Or am I misunderstanding what happened here. MB changed the end date on you?

I received full cash payment on the day I got fired. It seems like she really want me to "go away". I feel insulted. So I quit.

Your MB gave you three weeks pay and you're upset?

We gave our nanny almost four weeks notice and she stayed amazing until her last day. She helped tremendously with DS's orientation to daycare/preschool and has remained in his life ( refusing all payment for babysitting). She is now a beloved family friend. She got another job right away making $8 more an hour and is so happy with her new job. She and I have gotten my son and her new charge together for play-dates!!!
Do the right thing, OP.
