Would you let a baby sleep sitting up in a pack n play? RSS feed

I posted something in the daycare discussion and didn't like the responses I got. Basically the response was it's not a big deal. I wondering what the perspective from a nanny or employers of nannies would be. My son was sleeping sitting up in a pack n play when I picked him up from a home daycare yesterday. He was also face planted into a huge rolled up blanket at the same time. His diaper was also completely full and leaking all over his clothes. I explained to the daycare provider that he sleeps on his tummy. And even though he's 9 months old he is just now learning to sit up on his own. He can't get into a sitting position by himself and he can't roll from tummy to back yet. Lots of people said it's not a big deal but I get the feeling that their babies were all reaching their milestones by 9 months. The daycare provider was also not concerned about this at all when I picked him up. He wears a cranial molding helmet as well. I feel this is a really stupid thing to do. Doesn't she know babies can't breathe well when they're sitting up and sleeping?

Why can't he breathe when he's sitting up and sleeping? Not seeing the problem, sorry. The leaking diaper is a problem unless you buy honest diapers which are leaky or use cloth which are also leaky. When a kid falls asleep in most caregivers rule is let them sleep. Most kids are dragons if they wake too soon.

Maybe because he doesn’t yet have the neck control or strength to bring his head back up, which blocks the airway. He also wears a huge helmet on his head all the time. And no he doesn't wear honest or cloth diapers.

You shouldn't be sleeping a baby who can't roll on their tummy.

What's the big deal? Just ask the provider to put him into a horizontal position if he falls asleep sitting up again, citing the helmet as the reason.

OP, I don't understand why you're not leading with the health issues and physical limitations your son has. Most people, including me, don't know what special sleeping arrangements having a cranial helmet would necessitate so saying "he has a helmet" does not help.

For a developmentally normal 9 month old, sleeping sitting up would not be a big deal at all. Many get into the seated positions themselves and fall asleep that way on occasion, then later lay down.

The real question here is whether your son's health or developmental issues require him to be in a certain position when sleeping. In that case, your question should be, "my son needs to sleep in a certain position for health reasons, is it a problem that I found him sleeping in a different position at daycare?"

In which case, it depends. If you have communicated the issue to the daycare, then yes, it's a problem. If it's a true danger to your child, then get a note from your doctor so they know it's serious.

The leaky diaper would bother me, and if they sat him in the pack in play instead of laying him down (I think you said in another thread that he can't get into a seated position on his own?) then yes that would bother me.

You're not getting much support because you're not offering the critical details upfront.

Omg this!! And in a helmet which means it's orobably very hard for him to move his head to the side.
I think sitting up is fine. The rolled up blanket is a Nono, nothing in the crib for sleeping and th leaking diaper is a no no as well.

Huh? What does this even mean (the original comment). This baby should never sleep?

Op here: I didn't realize this wouldn't be an issue for a baby who is reaching his milestones. I did ask the childcare provider to put him on his tummy a few times.

Op again: yes that's correct. He can't get himself into or out of a seated position. He's such a baby still. The blanket thing bothered me as well.

Im confused, how is he sitting up and also face planted into a blanket at the same time? Im trying to picture what youre talking about.
No blankets or anything else should be in the plack n play with him, this would bother me. And if he has a helmet on and youre concerned about his airway make it clear they have to lay him down to sleep.

Op here: the blanket was rolled up folded into his tummy . It was a huge blanket.

Then yes this would concern me. I would make it clear he needs to have nothing in the crib with him and needs to be laying flat to sleep. If it happens again I would look into other providers.

This is insane! Babies need to sleep lying down, not sitting, in a safe environment, free of blankets, toys, or ANY objects, including crib bumpers. The best position for them to sleep in is on their backs--this advice comes after decades of conclusive research on SIDS. The leaky diaper is another big concern. This is so basic I would be looking for an alternative immediately.

It would bother me. He should be sleeping on his back if he can't yet roll over. Sitting up is a no no.

I was actually told babies sleeping car seats can be dangerous because of the positions is not ideal for breathing and the airway could be blocked.

I am sure if you google you will find some stories.
