I have recently hired a full time nanny for the first time. She will most likely be doing the grocery shopping & occasion trips to target/etc. I'm assuming that I would be reimbursing her for any items purchases for my child. My questions is how do I reimburse her? Do you give her a stipend to use towards groceries? I"m just not sure how to go about this. |
You either give her a credit card to use ( easiest in my opinion) or you give her petty cash or you reimburse her if she spends her own money. I would ask her if she has a preference. When I was a Nanny I used my own credit card for family stuff and kept all the receipts. When I got my monthly bill I wrote down how much they owed me and gave it to them with the receipts and they reimbursed me.
I had only been in the US a few years so had a low credit score and wanted to see it increase, thats why i wanted it on my card. I dont think its the norm. |
My boss pay me back in the weekend, and she's just pays me if I buy something for the kids or the house need. |
We have a credit card the manny uses. He puts all receipts from using credit card in an envelope in the kitchen. |
If you are having the nanny do regular grocery and other household shopping, you should provide either immediate reimbursement via cash or personal check or a debit/credit card in her name that you transfer money into regularly that she can use for these purchases. |
Is the credit card in his name? If not, how can he use it if they ask for a photo id? Serious question--I am on the fence about having my nanny use a credit card and I wonder how other families do it. |
You can add them as an authorized user to a credit card. So open one and don't use it and give it to her. I looked into refillable edit cards and the service fees are high. I hair give my nanny a visa debit card that's not refillable and she lets me know when it runs out. |
Thanks, pp. That is what I needed to know. |
We use a bluebird account for our nanny. They have an option to add users to a family account and then you can transfer money over. It can be used as a credit card or ATM card so it's good for when she needs actual cash. |
Well for one thing, they may assume he's my husband. For another, self-checkout. The reality is though, the card has his name on it and the charges show up on our bill. He only uses that card for things for our family. |
Nanny/household manager here. I do the grocery shopping and household related errands. The family I work for gave me a credit card in my name linked to their account for all work related purchases. It is so much easier than keeping track of petty cash or reimbursement. I keep all of the receipts in a mini pocket folder at their house. Additionally, it is a good way to build trust with your nanny. |
I think it is best to have a card with their name, as you do. I have noticed that the many grocery stores and Target in my area are requesting photo ID for purchases over $100. |
Thank you, this sounds like a good system. You are correct--it is an issue of trust. My nanny is a bit of a compulsive shopper so I have held off until now to give her access to plastic. |
I am the PP who uses Bluebird. You could try it because you can move over a certain amount to mitigate your risk. I trust my nanny completely and it was more about the ATM issue for me, but it could work for you. |
I will look into that option, too. Thanks! |
