Switching from nanny to daycare at 2.5-3 years old? RSS feed

DS is 2.5, and he has had the same nanny since I went back to work at four months. The nanny is great, and he loves her. DS also loves being around other kids, so we have him in a part-time morning preschool (nanny takes him and picks him up, so we pay her full time). Between the nanny's salary, taxes/Breedlove fees, and the part-time preschool, we are paying about $1,100/week.

What is the comparable rate for a good daycare in the DC area? None of the daycares have rates listed on their sites. We are happy with our situation now, but we are REALLY stretching our finances to make it happen. And, more importantly, DS seems much more interested in being around kids all the time. So we just don't know if the nanny makes sense for him like it did when he was an infant or young toddler. We also feel very loyal to our nanny and can't even imagine firing her.

Anyone else face this situation?

Which full day care would you consider? 99% are not good places.

OP, ask about this in the regular forum- you're not going to get a great deal of helpful responses in a nanny-only forum. (i.e., PP above.)

I say put your son in school full-time, but not until your nanny has secured a new position.
You sound extremely loyal to her which as a nanny, I personally find refreshing.

Then have her baby-sit your son on occasional weekends for "date nights," etc.

That does sound like quite a bit of money for one kid. To give some context, we pay about the same amount for 2 kids' childcare. When the kid is at preschool, does your nanny do other work in the interim? Perhaps prepare a meal, clean? That seems only fair. Otherwise maybe you or your spouse could do the early morning dropoff and the nanny could basically start at 12:30 when she picks up the kid (although I realize that's not ideal hours for nanny)?

There are great all daycares in this area. I've been doing the search myself and nearly all of them, for that age, will be less than $2k per month. That's a huge savings. Unless you're in a situation where baby #2 is coming soon and you really want to hold on to this nanny, it's definitely an option worth exploring.

Op you could put your child in an excellent montessori school or other great preschool for 2K a month. That seems like a better idea at that age than a traditional daycare. The situation you have now sounds nice but that is really a lot of money per month so unless you are really wealthy, it is too much

Most for that age would be around $1200-$1500 a month. However, the transition is a bear and there are a lot of things the nanny did that I didn't account for - feeding, bathing, home and happy when I got home!! Now daycare pick-up at 6:00: overtired, hungry, dirty and makes night time very exhausting!!!

You should definitely ask this in the preschool forum. The day care I am looking at is 440 per week.
