Taxes, pay and new nanny! Is this correct?!?

We are helping our nanny find a new job and, of course, everyone asks what it costs! I am trying to put it in the simple terms but I am getting a lot of gasps! Am I missing something?!?

Hourly: around $18 (plus 10 hours OT)
Gross - $975/week
Net - $700/week
Employer taxes - $110/week

All and all the bottom line is any family will need around $4,000 a month for a full-time, 50 hour a week nanny. Does that sound correct? Every time I explain to a new family, they gasp!!!!

Yes, this is an accurate ballpark. Most people want their childcare to be dirt cheap. It isn't. Most people can't really afford to outsource their childcare work, but they don't want to do it either.

Op here - yes this is ONLY a ballpark. Don't want this to turn into another fight over pay. Just want new families to understand the costs. We love our nanny and do not want her to end up getting screwed.

People are gasping because a typical first time Nanny employer seems to assume they only have to pay minimum wage, no ot, no benefits, and certainly no pesky taxes!

So they think $400 a week is a fine wage for a nanny. And when you give them a reality check, they freak out.

Recently seen elsewhere, a mom bragging that her 50 hour a week Nanny was paid $450/week. This was in response to someone who actually had a clue.

The only thing I might add is the new employers should get workers' compensation insurance. We recently got it in DC for the year and think it was around $800.

Every time I've looked into whether I should get workers comp insurance in VA, the answer I find is no. Am I missing something?

Not required in VA but you should talk to an ins. agent - you can get voluntary coverage.

No one pays $18 an hour. Actually few people mess around with hourly anyways as salary is easier. Average pay for a nanny (~50 hours a week) is like $500, no taxes, no benefits. You can have a nanny for $2000 a month easily. And that is a good nanny too, not an illegal.

Not true. We pay our nanny 17.50 per hour. Time and a half for any ot. All in it is about 45k a year.

You're not in DC, are you? Legal pay is the norm here b/c so many people have security clearances.

People suck. Because it isnt that they have jobs or anything, or might be working themselves...they just want things to be cheap so they can sleep on a mattress made of money.

Agreed. We pay approx $2200 a month. Never need OT, but this includes paid vacations etc...this is above the board--completely legal (we have TSSCI so we do not mess around either).

I don't believe PP - that is DIRT cheap for a full-time 50 hour a week nanny, cannot be legal.
