After school nanny and summer? Are they out there? RSS feed

My son is currently in daycare but we may have an opportunity to put him in a Montessori program. Problem is, I don't get home until 6 and school ends at 3 (no aftercare at Arlington schools for three year olds). I've never researched nannies since my employer has onsite daycare so I could use some help. Is the pool of part time nannies plentiful or is it mostly those that can't get hired full time? Thanks

The montessori program doesn't offer aftercare?

You can get an afternoon nanny for sure, though it will be expensive. The other option is a college student. Where do you live?

OP here. We live in North Arlington (Jamestown elementary). Montessori offers aftercare to kids 4 and up (not three year olds).

Hiring a part time nanny can be challenging depending on your expectations. Any person who has dedicated themselves to this as a career (with a relevant educational background, extensive training, and experience) is looking for full time hours. The people you will find for part time care are 1. More casual about their commitment to the job, 2. Have other time commitments that may or may not take priority, and 3. Are likely not as experienced and well trained.

Your best for what you're looking for is a college student with some experience with younger children, perhaps pursuing an education/early childhood development degree. Offer a competitive rate, guaranteed hours, holidays, and PTO to attract candidates that will take your position seriously and be willing to stick around. Everyone always says PT jobs dont offer benefits like PTO. That's because usually the rate of turnover doesn't matter. If you don't want constant nanny turnover for your kid, treat your employee with respect and generosity.

Do local colleges have job boards to post nanny positions or is it better to post on this blog? Thanks so much!

I know on care.com you can search for college students - somehow I found everyone attending GMU. It was really easy and they're usually a lot less expensive than a regular nanny.

I know that AU does, but that's pretty far from you. Not sure about GW. That said, try sitter city- that's a great site.

Or care.com too

That's what I did when in college. It may be hard to find someone that can provide after school care M-F due to college schedule so you may need to split it up between a couple girls. Good luck in your search

Yes, Marymount actually has a job board for nannys, tutors, etc. If I can find the link, I will post it.

College students may not be able to do the schedule M-F and/or may not be available for the full time you need over the summer. Have you thought about looking for a live-in nanny or au pair? Both would give you the flexibility to have the hours you need, the only issue might be that you might run out of weekly hours for the AP (45) during school breaks.
