It depends on the situation. If it's a family who knows the sitter, they are more likely to pay a higher rate because they trust the person. If they have 3+ kids, they're likely to pay more, though not necessarily that much. I know a few parents who are planning on having 2-3 families of kids sleeping in the same house, and the sitter will be responsible for up to 8 kids. The shorter the night, the higher the hourly rate is likely to be. But there are tons of parents who aren't planning on paying a penny more than they normally pay.

Only a dumb nanny would charge her regular rate on NYE.

Sure folks can charge (and should pay) a premium for NYE.

How is this news OP?

I sure wouldn't pay $60/hr for anything but maybe some would.

I might pay one of our regular teenage babysitters double her rate - but that would be $25-30/hr.

We don't use our nanny for "date night" kinds of things - her rates are too high and we don't need that level of professional for someone to be in the house while the kids are asleep.

Holiday childcare always costs more.

I earn $28 an hour regularly and feel that one of perks of having a nanny is availability at the same rate on NYE.

+1. Nothing will sour an employee/employer relationship more than trying to nickel and dime them.

Tough. NY'S Eve, Valentine's Day are prime time for babysitters and you pay prime time.

While that is true, I would be disappointed if my employers didn't offer something on top of the regular rate if I babysat on NYE. I did it two years in a row for my full-time family and both years I got a hefty tip and a cab home paid for. I do charge more for random babysitting families, though - not $60, but a bit over my usual overtime rate.

If you're paying only $45 or $50, be happy!

No, I don't gouge my employers that way. NYE and Valentines Day as well as any other day is $28 an hour with applicable overtime. I am a their nanny and not their babysitter.
