7 year old behavior RSS feed

New to working with a 7 year old regularly. Is it age appropriate for him to make spitting noises at me when I'm talking to him? He and the 5 year old get silly a lot but it seems over the top rude, but maybe my expectations are too high for 7? Thank you

Totally normal for boys (of almost any age!)

That doesn't mean it can't be something you can work on teaching him NOT to do, in the general category of appropriate behavior, but it is certainly normal.

Age appropriate, but not socially acceptable. He is just making the noise, so I would work on that, but it wouldn't be a priority for me.

Thanks for the input! Glad to know it's normal, although definitely not okay. If he were just making noise I might ignore it but he spits and then runs away and ignores anything you say or ask. He also does this with his parents and being all AP about it they just ask him fifteen plus times until he listens. I have no interest in repeating myself like that when I'm asking him not to wrap a cord around his brother's neck. Guess I have some brainstorming to do!!

Oh, spitting is completely not acceptable! I'm sorry I misunderstood, I thought he was just doing sound effects, which is totally normal but also not acceptable.

If you and the parents are that far apart in discipline, is there any way to get everyone on the same page? If there's not, I would look for a new family. Discipline is one of the few things that I won't compromise, because I won't deal with hellions, and the parents are hampering your ability to be effective.
