| Special lotion? The mom seems to think whenever I hold the baby she breaks out in a rash? She thinks it's the lotion I use? She gave me one bottle to try out, the baby stopped breaking out. This lotion has no smell to it and I am not a fan! I do not want the little girl to break out in a rash but, should the family supply me the lotion since they want me to use it? It's a lot more money then my bath and body works lotion and I don't care to spend the extra money on something I don't even like ? |
| No. A professional nanny should not be using scented body products when caring for young children and infants. For exactly this reason. Those things often cause allergic reactions in babies and toddlers, and there is some evidence that a lot of those artificial scents can be tied to endocrine disruptors. You should never have been wearing it to work to begin with, so no. The family should not have to provide it for you. If you want to use lotion, find something that is unscented. If the family wants you to use only lotions that are organic or all-natural or something like that, then I could see asking them to pay for it but unscented is something that you should be wearing by default as a nanny. |
| Or don't wear any lotion. I do not think they should provide it. nice they gave you something to try once. you don't need fragrant lotion for work, buy something for sensitive skin at CVS with no scent. Put your lotion on in the car at the end of the day before you go home if you insist. |
A "professional" nanny should be compensated enough to afford good lotion, but most just aren't. |
| Yes, OP. Tell her what your budget is, and see what she suggests. |
| If she can afford bath and body works she can afford something inexpensive at CVS. Vaseline works just fine. |

Nanny here - I'm being asked to use the lotion that the family uses. It's in a smaller bottle then my bath and body works....I can make
My bath and body works go a long way. |
| Bath and Body Works has great deals! I just got buy 3 get 3 free plus $10 off of purchase! |
| I would ask if you can use an off brand that has no sent that's might be cheaper. |

If the family requires a certain brand, organic, or other high end lotion, yes, they are responsible for providing it for you to use at work. The bottle would stay at their house, you would only put it on there, and you would be responsible for telling them when you need more. If the family requires a formula that is unscented, possibly sensitive skin, but does not require organic or a certain brand, you buy your own.
I agree completely with 07.58. We all know that babies have sensitive skin, so why are you wearing something that can cause skin or respiratory issues?! |
| You should be able to get a big bottle of plain unseen ted lotion at the drug store. I would be embarrassed to ask for my nanny family to buy my lotion. I wouldn't let them dictate which lotion I used, but I think it is reasonable to ask you not to wear scented lotions. |

If your lotion can be demonstrated to cause a rash (and it sounds that way from what you are describing) then you should not be using that lotion before (or during) work.
Period. Use your lotion after work. If you need to use a lotion then find something unscented and hypoallergenic. I think the family can reasonably request that you not use the lotion that is causing a reaction in the baby. I don't think you can require them to supply you with lotion unless you have a medical need that cannot be met in some way. |
Yeah - OP you have this framed wrong. The lotion you have chosen to wear irritates your charge. You need to change lotions to one that doesn't, or you need to stop wearing lotion. It was nice of the family to let you try theirs, but this is your problem 100%. |
| If employer insists on specific product. Employer pays. |
finally someone with a good answer!! If someone at work didn't like your perfume you had on and asked you to stop wearing it or go buy a more expensive kind that didn't bother them, would you? I stopped wearing my sented lotion! I love the baby and don't want her to continue to have a rash. The mom requested me to use the kind that the entire family uses so it's all the same....after my bottle is gone I don't feel like I shouldn't add lotion into my monthly budget (it comes in small bottles and would be gone faster then other stuff). In the winter months I need lotion due to super dry skin...I don't feel like I should be held responsible to pay for something like this. |
