2yo not dealing well with part-time daycare RSS feed

Hi. My charge (two and three months) recently started a 9am to 3pm nursery program (the actual program is 9am to 1am and then they sleep for ~two hours). She's not dealing well with separation from her parents and me. She's apparently hysterical in the mornings when her dad drops her off and her caregiver let me know at pickup that she cries intermittently most of the day. She's happy to see me when I collect her, but she is very clingy and asking for mom as soon as she's awake enough. She even says at night and unprompted during the day that she doesn't want to go to daycare. She's only been going for less than two weeks and I know an adjustment period is normal, but are there ways to help her ease into the new routine? Something we could do at home to help her adjust?

It does take time up to a month before my toddler would not cry. That said preschool hours were 9 to noon. Could you try getting your charge out earlier by 1pm and nap at home so its not such a long day?

That is a really bad age to transition to daycare! Either start them as infants or wait until they are at least three.

Poor little soul - I feel sorry for her.

I second this suggestion. Can you work it out so that she is napping at home? I can't honestly think of any reason MB would have a problem with this...

My charges (2 and 4 months) are going through the same transition as they just started school.

A couple of things that have helped us-

Bringing a comfort item from home. I know not all places allow this, but ours is fine with it.

Reading lots of books about school and reminding them that I will always come back to pick them up.

Picking them early and then gradually increasing the time they are at school. If I was you, I'd try picking her up at 1PM. There really is no reason to leave her there for sleeping.
