Nanny's Birthday coming up

| We've had a nanny for our first child for about 9 months now and her birthday is in July. We are very happy with her, our child loves her, and I think all is going well. I'd like to do something to recognize her birthday, but am at a loss. It feels funny to give her cash (how much?, it doesn't seem very personal), we gave her a gift card to her family's favorite restaurant already at Christmas so I'm not sure about repeating that, and I can't come up with a "something" to buy. One idea I had was maybe to just give her a really nice card with a note about how much she means to our family and her birthday as a bonus day off. I'd love input from either nannies or employers about this idea, or other ideas you are willing to share. |

| I am a nanny and I would LOVE your suggestion, OP. Often when parents on this board ask for ideas, that us exactly what I suggest. My two cents is to let her know ahead so she can schedule a massage or lunch with her sister or whatever ahead of time. Go with your idea, it's a good one. |

| A little extra time is always nice. Agree that it's most helpful if you let her know at least a day beforehand. I have also had employers make me a cake or cupcakes with help from charges or have charges make a card. Your baby is a little young for the cake, but you could put his footprint or handprint in a card. |

If you have the flexibility, you might consider giving her the option of choosing one paid day off during her birthday week. That way she could opt to take off a Monday or a Friday and giver herself a three day weekend  (assuming her birthday doesn't already fall on a Monday or Friday)

I think your idea for a bonus day off with a nice card is wonderful.
Or you could give her a gift card to somewhere else since you already gave her one to the restaurant. Perhaps Target, Walmart, etc. Or you could also gift her a Visa gift card. Or Amazon. You sound like a very considerate employer to remember your nanny's special day. She is lucky to work for such thoughtful bosses. |

I would love the day off if it works for you. Just make sure you give her notice so she can plan to do something fun if she wants to.
Also, maybe a card/drawing/handprint from your kid would mean a lot to me too. |

A nanny working an 8 hour day making the typical $12/hr doesn't make $100 in a day, plus taxes will also be removed. |

\ Seriously? What nanny in DC makes only $12 an hour and works only 8 hours a day? I make $20 an hour and work 10 hours each day (nannies generally have to cover the commuting time of parents who work 8 hours). I honestly do not know one nanny in this area who makes less than $17. |
