Hello everyone,

I have a concern with my NF. I have been working with them for 3 months now and we have a contract that stated they will provide me a car for their children, but since then nothing. Therefore, we walk to everywhere park, library, playdate, classes... Today MB asked me to drive my car to the park with the children because it is very hot and I just declined because we talk about the car issue and I told them that I do not take a job if I have to drive my car. Walking is not an issue but I don't know what is the distance norm. Friday the little girl who is 5 years asked me if I can take them to another park, which is far and not walkable and I just told her that her parents would take them during the weekend and my MB told me that I could take the bus, but I told her that I was not comfortable taking two heavy children in the bus with a heavy stroller. Do you think I have to ask them when they will buy the car and do you think walking 3 miles to go and come from somewhere is reasonable? Thank you for your time.
NB: Sorry if my writing is not very well. Anyway, the grand parents are Spanish so the parents just want me to speak Spanish with the kids so my English is not an issue.

Are you legal?

I routinely walk a mile from the nearest bus stop to my home, so to me, a mile is nothing. I'd say two miles is okay but anything longer is excessive on a daily basis.

Talk to her. "MB, in our contract it states you will provide a car for me to drive the children places. When will that be happening?"

You need a new job. They either had an extra car and got rid of it or planned to let you use theirs and share and changed their mind. They aren't going to buy you a car for work purposes.

I'd take the kids on the bus withou the stroller. The 5 year can walk to and from the bus stop. How old is the younger one? Perhaps ask for a lightweight umbrella stroller to take on the bus and pack bottle or thermoses of ice water.

You said in your OP you weren't comfortable taking two heavy kids and a heavy stroller on the bus. I was saying how I would overcome that particular obstacle. If that wasn't the actual issue then why mention it in the first place? Just ask MB when they're getting a car and then proceed accordingly. You might need to adjust your expectations or find a new job if the new expectations are unacceptable to you.

I routinely walk about five miles a day with my charge - but I knew that going into this job.

Your employer, of course, should provide you with a car if that is what was promised. However, you have to be willing to accept the fact that they simply may not be able to provide you with a car. If that is the case then it will be your choice to use your own car or quit.

Where the hell are you walking and are they toddlers in strollers or walking on their own? Good fried. I walk sometimes 3 miles with my 5yr old and that alone takes about an hour.

My charge is in his stroller. Walking back and forth to morning activities and walking back and forth to the park in the afternoons. I "map-quested" it and it is 5.2 miles. (We're in Southern California - weather is rarely an issue).

Ummm I'm the person you're quoting and I'm not OP. As a nanny I would agree with the bus idea if I hadn't been promised a car. OP was promised a car.

Ah, makes sense. I don't have children in strollers and they walk quite slow after a few miles and their legs get tired.

Your weather is also much nicer than here! It's either cold or god awful hot and humid.

Why don't you want to use your car? I get they promised to provide one, but since it is not happened why not change the arrangement. They should reimburse you then for miles driven.

If that doesn't work, then bus with a light umbrella stroller could be OK.
