Have you seen this NY Post article about entitled Diva Nannies?

I am sure the entitlement is much higher in NY than in DC. Have you had a nanny that was so demanding of perks in our area?

It goes to show you, only the rich can really afford a true nanny.

Well the employer who didn't realize you have to pay time and half is at fault.

Some of the other stuff is crazy - showing up late on your first day, demanding a lunch stipend.

I will say though, that perks in NYC are just different. People don't have cars so indulge in other things, and once you have a fancy family membership, adding the nanny just isn't that much. We get a summer pool membership down here - not nearly as fancy - but we add the nanny on so she can take the kids. It also means she can spend her weekends there and bring her friends for free - I can see how in NYC you'd have even more of that kind of thing.

I was struck by the average hourly rate - it seemed so low!

And only 15% are paid on the books? The market must just be nuts up there.

Struck? Totally normal and inline.

I guess so, but I thought NYC would be higher than DC. I would have expected the average to be $18 or something. It seems like we're always hearing here (DCUM) about how much higher the rates are there, but this article kind of gives the lie to that (though the perks are certainly different!)

This article reports $17/hr for NYC and several articles for DC, and heads of nanny placement firms, cite $15-20/hr for our area, so that's on par. Honestly, I find rents in DC much higher than I did in NYC, and food's more expensive here too, so I'm not surprised that the wages are approx the same. The extra perks are interesting though. Anyone know how much a family gym membership goes for in NYC these days? Is it just like an extra $100/month to add another household member to that? If so, seems like a cost-effective way to plus up the overall compensation package.

There's zero confirmation of these low rates. How can there be if they're mostly off the books? I bet the employers are artificially deflating what they really need to pay.

NYC is a crazy market. There are nannies making less than minimum wage and others making over 100K. There is also a lot of competition amongst families for good nannies, so I can see how some nannies take advantage of that.

You're probably "taking advantage" of your boss by getting pay too much, aren't you?

Yea. I hear these high rates on DCUM as well, but when I interview I'm seeing about $15 as well.

Among your broken English nannies, $15/hr may be your average. But as usual, most of them are off the books, so there's no paycheck stub or W-2 to verify anything.

Huh? I see $15 on the books with a citizen the norm around here. Most people in DC hold a clearance and must pay on the books. I have no problems finding an American to fill the role.

How do single adults in the d.c. area pay their bills on $15 an hour without government assistance. Serious question. I am a nanny. I am able to put a tiny bit away a month. But I don't have anything saved for retirement. I am 30. I make $900 pre tax a week

Where exactly do you "see" what you claim?
