Nanny Services in DC area (Alexandria VA specifically)-- waste of money?

Hi All-

I am currently starting out on a nanny search for my first born (he will be 3.5 months in May when I need the nanny). I am unsure how to best ensure that my son has someone responsible and fully vetted taking care of him-- and as I've never gone through the process before would love any/all advice as to the best route to go. I have heard of services that sound very pricey such as White House Nannies-- are they worth the cost? Better to go through message boards? Let me know if you have any advice for a first time mom!

Talk to other moms so you can learn as much as possible about what has/hasn't worked for them.

Use neighborhood listservs and similar peer to peer networks to find the best candidates.
