Babysitter rate RSS feed

DC's nanny went on having an office job, but offered to babysit from time to time (e.g., date nights, weekends). Since she is not a FT nanny now, I assume we need to pay her more. What do you pay your part-time babysitters (DMV area)? Thank you.

I charge $15 per hour for occasional babysitting.

$15-$20 per hour. My old nanny family pays me $20 an hour for any weekend babysitting I do for them.

I also charge $15-20/hour. You should ask her, as she likely has her own rates, but she may also be babysitting for you simply as a means to see your kid.

I pay $10 an hour for two toilet trained kids.

Thank you! She will be babysitting just to see DC, but I want to make sure she does not think we are using her. $15-20 sounds right.

You're underpaying.

$15/hr for one child and $17/hr for two.

I'd pay $15. I don't pay more than that for anyone to babysit my kids, unless it's their current nanny and she would get more because it would be overtime.

For adult babysitters I pay $13/hr, but for a former nanny I would probably do $15.

I have a couple of great teenage babysitters who make $10/hr so I have no need to go higher than $15/hr no matter what the circumstances.

No, I think for a newborn you must pay about $20 an hour to get someone with knowledge and experience. A teenager is fine for older children who will be asleep most of the time.

This is the most prudent advice so far.

No one here mentioned newborns - not the OP or anyone since.

I also happen to disagree with you - I have twins and I assure you they were FAR easier to babysit when they were infants than they are as toddlers, preschoolers, etc... So I have paid MORE for babysitting during those stages, and especially during any potty training time, than I did when they were infants.

Of course, as newborns they didn't have babysitters other than family or their nanny (who doesn't make $20/hr) so your point is still irrelevant.

But why you're looking for a fight remains the eternal mystery of DCUM.

I agreed with another poster. It's your problem if you think that's "looking for a fight." Grow up a little.
