Vent: MB trying to make me come in with strep throat. RSS feed

I've been working with my NF for 6 weeks. I woke up today with strep throat and called immediately. I went to a fast clinic and tested positive. I am contagious for 24 hours. I told MB right away, explaining I can't be around my charge ( he's 5 months old). MB asked if I can come in but wear a face mask. I told her it isn't advised. My charge is an infant so its more worrisome to be contagious and around him.

I work at 12 and she told me to let her know my decision by 12:30. I feel bad and worried because its only been a month with this NF. I feel a strong obligation to not compromise my charges health, especially with something like strep.

WWYD? I am 98% going to tell her that I can't come in. I don't want to risk my charge catching it. I am already positive and have a fever close to 102.

You can't go in. I'm sure she's got something important going on today that she didn't want to share with you and she's panicking, but you can't go in. Especially with a baby that young.

I had strep throat recently. I could hardly take care of my own kids with the high fever, and by "take care," I mean, "watch TV in the same room and order pizza for dinner."
I can't imagine asking someone else to do that.

You can't go in today. Your MB will have to find back-up. Let her know ASAP.

Yeah, that. Don't think evil of her, but you can't go.

I don't think she is evil because I assume its an important day with work ( both parents work from home) but I can't risk my charges health. I told her I won't be in today. She didnt seem happy so I am worried about getting let go.

The parents are irresponsible if there's no emergency options in place. Not the nanny's fault.

I'd go in.. If her baby or family catches it then next time she'll think twice about asking you to still come in sick and contagious

Speaking from experience, it's possible for every backup plan to fall through.

Idiot parents. Why do they expect nannies to be robots?

I would let you go. 6 weeks and you are already taking days off? You work with a child that isn't even around other kids so don't try to play the "my charge made me sick" card.

I'd go with the stipulation it's only for 2 hrs max so she can do whatever important thing she has to do. If she catches it, then oh well. If not, then you'll know they good immune systems and not to worry.

Dang, usually I side with the MB's on this board but not this time. This nanny has a document saying she has Strep and trying to be responsible, you must be a peach to work for

I am not pulling " my charge got me sick" card. I have no clue where you got that from. My charge is actually around many kids. We are active in 3 classes a week ( MBs decision). I know 6 weeks is early and it sucks but I can't do anything about catching strep. I'm not a robot.

I know for a fact that MB does not have any backup in place.

I also find it quite funny that you feel you know that my charge isn't around other children. Just because you may be a lazy nanny doesn't mean I am.

How does anyone put up with you?
