How to adjust nanny pay for 2nd child? RSS feed

Anonymous
Hello,

I currently employ a nanny to take care of my toddler when I work and she will also take care of my new baby when I return to work after my maternity leave ends. She charges a certain amount per hour for one child and we rounded the total of hours up and pay her a monthly salary. She charges a different, higher amount per hour to watch 2 children.
After my maternity leave ends, my toddler is going to start going to preschool a few mornings a week. How do you recommend I calculate the raise we will be giving our nanny for watching our 2 kids? Do we pay her the two-child rate on those mornings she would only be taking care of the little one while the older is in preschool? Or do we adjust her raised monthly salary taking that into account (e.g. working X hours watching 1 child + working Y hours watching 2 children)? What do you suggest/recommend? What is best practice? I want to do what's right and fair for the both of us.

Thanks!

I wouldn't pay attention to these hours where your toddler will be in preschool because there will be days when he won't go (tired, sick, snow days etc).
I would think about it when your toddler is in school full time.

I'd pay her the amount she charges for 2 kids.
I mean, if you can afford it I'd advise you to. If not, do the math and be prepared to face (MAYBE) a unhappy nanny.
If she goes beyond for you, I wouldn' t do the math.

I wouldn't automatically give a raise, wait for her to ask for one. Two kids isn't harder than one (it's actually easier since they can often entertain themselves) and like you said one will usually be gone.

If she feels entitled to a raise she will bring it up, otherwise save your money.

She will probably ask for a raise.

And YES, 2 kids is harder than one ! Especially when they have an age difference (here it's a baby and toddler).

Any nanny would tell you that.

I nanny for two kids and it's so much better than just one.

A toddler and a newborn are easier to care for than just a toddler? Huh?

You are doing the right thing by considering an additional child raise, an infant is more work, and a new child raise is standard.
Average is an additional $1 - 2 dollars more an hour.

Sometimes a little less if nanny is making on the higher end or above average market rate.

Congrats on the new baby!

Two kids that are older (like two 4 year olds) may be able to entertain themselves--but I wouldn't count on a toddler and a newborn to be able to entertain themselves. Your statement is absurd.

Thisssss. What kind of crack are you smoking? Sure, two older kids are a breeze. A newborn and a toddler are...well, that's about as taxing as it gets for most nannies.
