Question about extra vacation. RSS feed

When the feds do this they call it "furloughing" and people are screaming bloody murder over it. It's not "vacation" if you'd really prefer to be working so you can get paid. It's totally different from an office working getting another week of vacation since they would still be paid for that time. For the love of god, why not view nanny's salary as a fixed weekly expense and save yourself a lot of hassle and aggravation? This will increase the odds of having a long term nanny at the expense of.....paying what you can afford to pay since you pay it every week of the year!

I'm PP and an MB, BTW.

I agree that the nanny should still be paid, but why are people calling the OP names? No need to be rude.

+2 This is what I state in my contract/work agreement. I'm available for pet-sitting (not house sitting as I have my own responsibilities at home), bringing in the mail, watering the plants, will go to the house to wait for a service call if required, do a closet clean out, full cleaning of the children's rooms/nursery/playroom, and so on, and I get paid fully for those weeks. If I want to coincide my own vacation with theirs and am not available for those things, it is unpaid (or taken as one of my scheduled vacation days if I prefer). I don't think anything else is fair for a FT nanny (35hr/wk+).

If she's a 3-hours-in-the-afternoon, 4-day-a-week nanny, it gets a little fuzzier for me as I don't have a lot of experience with PT benefits.

This is an excellent idea! (I'm a MB).

If your nanny is like mine, all other things equal, she would prefer having extra money over having extra time off. If she has received a bonus from you in the past, she will be looking forward to receiving something similar from you this year and the next, assuming she maintains the same level of performance. If you change her contract to increase her vacation at the expense of her income, her morale will decrease. The hours she is not working for you, she is likely using for additional work or her personal pursuits and she will not like to change her regular schedule to accommodate your make-up hours.
