What is the weirdest gift? RSS feed

What is the weirdest or funniest gift that your employer ever gave you? I had this one set of parents who always shopped at thrift stores. It's not my thing but to each his own. Anyway for Christmas the mom gave me a present, when I took it home it was a lime green sweat shirt with fringes on the breast area. On closer inspection it looked to have coffee or tea stains on it. Lol lol Just don't give me anything for Pete's sake!

There was a family with one kid who I did regular date night work for. I got him a small gift the first Christmas I knew them and for nothing in return which was ok. The next year I wasn't going to get anything, figured they're not the gift exchanging type (I'd known them two + years at this point) and the mom texted and made a big deal that they had a gift for me when I got there that night and to be sure and take it home and put it under the tree. I scrambled and got a little something for the kid, a vintage book that had their family name in the title. I opened the gift on Xmas and it was a pair of socks I had accidentally left behind when I did an overnight job, and a couple pair of weird fuzzy socks, one brown with stuffed monkeys sewn to the tops and the other rainbow color with some other damn thing sewn to it and a bag of giant Jr Mints shaped like bells was dumped in too. (probably too hide the musty smell of the socks.) the socks didn't even have tags and one was just balled up like she pulled them out of her drawer. It was beyond weird and to this day I have no idea what she was thinking. Maybe she was drunk. (entirely possible.) I didn't have it in me to even say thank-you or find out what the back story was etc. At one point she asked if I had a nice Xmas and I was going to say thanks thenbut the kid interrupted ius and the conversation changed.

Wow, those are truly wierd! Mine seems tame in comparison. A few years back I got a used Martha Stewart's Housekeeping Handbook. The mom told me I could learn a thing or two from the book. I think it was her hint that she wanted me to do more around her house.

My boss works at a major corporation, somewhat high on the totem pole. She wanted to treat her team to an Xmas party, so she asked me to help by picking up a mountain of gifts at the dollar store. This was a nice party, and these were meant to be proper gifts, not silly party game prizes, you know? It was really weird, I thought.... Then on my last day before Xmas vacation, she gave me one of these little trinkets with a whole lot of pomp and circumstance. Besides the fact that I had done the work of buying it, and its cheapness, it was also really tacky. My boss would totally tell me if she had forgotten to get something, so this was definitely a planned thing. The previous year she got me a lovely sweater.

Another time when she had a TV to get rid of, she tried to sell it to me. I declined (vigorously), and a week or two later, she gave it to me as a wedding present, together with a sound system and an item of furniture. I already had a TV, and hardly ever watch it - which she knows. And it completely dwarfs my tiny living room. It was completely calculated to help her be rid of the thing, and in that moment I didn't feel as though I could decline the offer.

She's a great boss and a wonderful woman, but sometimes I just shake my head a bit.

Confession: I work in Corporate for a makeup company, and often bring home tons of trial sizes of makeup. Every other month or so, I set out a basket of them and tell my nanny to take whatever she wants from there.

Hopefully she doesn't find that weird.

I don't think that's weird at all. It's not like you are giving them to her as a birthday or Christmas gift. I know I would appreciate a MB who did that for me.

O.P here, these are some funny gifts. Lol lol
I just remembered one mom was very thrifty. She mixed up some hot chocolate she already had in her kitchen cabinet with some other nasty spices.
Then she gave me 2 golden cups from the dollar store. She then proceeded to tell me not to put them in the dishwasher because "the gold" would come off.

We were in a share so again she was busy digging in the cabinet where she got out some dried kidney beans, noodles, rice and some spices. She then placed them in a mason jar. Then she wrote down a recipe telling them to make soup out of the ingredients. Lord, she added that they should add their own meat. Lol lol lol This couple and myself laughed so hard. We has tears running down our cheeks

No, that's great because it isn't a gift! It's great - you (and her) get to check out colors you might not try if you had to buy and plus makeup is so expensive - this is great!

I'd rather get 0 gift than receiving such crappy and cheap ones.

I often get cheap gifts from one family I used to work for. I used to get nice gifts for their kids (xmas, birthdays, no reason), now I do like them, I buy small stuff. I know it's not fair to the kids but I'm sick of buying nice stuff and getting crap.

O.P again My friend's boss gave her a $20.00 gift certificate from Old Navy, we spent most of the day trying to find something lol I remember asking her why didn't they just give her a gift certificate from Macys at least she could have put more money towards it to get something nice.

I also remember one mom went to California for vacation, she was so excited in bringing me something back. When I opened the package it was these black crocks. She made a big deal telling me how expensive they were. I hate those shoes plus they were way too big for my feet. I looked like a Swedish
Milk maid or Daffy ducks sister. I finally put them in the shoe bin for needy people.

A thrifter zip up vest with a corporate logo that had my home state in its name, because "how much I must miss things from New Mexico."
