paying taxes for college student part-time babysitter

| we are thinking of hiring a sitter in dc for 12 hours per week. job entails some driving. do we really need to withhold medicare/SS for her? who actually does that? |

I nannied throughout college. I did go on a few interviews where families wanted to withhold taxes, but the vast majority of families had no intention of paying taxes for such a PT sitter.
FWIW if it is something you want/need to do (the families I interviewed with all had careers where it could be dicey for them not to do it 100% on the up and up) the tax withholding wasn't a deal breaker for me, I ended up not taking those positions for other reasons. So I'm sure you'll still be able to find a nanny to agree to it. |
