We are starting a nanny share where one family needs the nanny full-time (40hrs/week) and the other family only needs part-time care. Nanny will be paid a higher rate when she is watching both kids (pay split between the families), a slightly lower rate when only caring for one child. For anyone with experience in this situation, how do you handle pay when one family goes on vacation or is not using the share? The family that is full-time found the nanny, and has committed full-time hours to the nanny. But if that family does not use their full 40 hours, are they responsible for compensating the nanny and/or the other family? If the part-time family does not use their committed hours, should they offer compensation to the other family or nanny? I would appreciate any advice on how to handle this situation, from those who have been part of "uneven" shares.... |
Simple - you pay the same rate week in and week out regardless of whether you use the nanny or not. Especially in a share guaranteed hours are critical. This goes for equal shares and unequal ones. |

Our share is uneven and vacation/sick time is handled by each side of the share independently--so each family does one week of sick and two of vacation, but as far as hours, that means accruing 48 hours for one family per week and 36 hours for the other family. Checks are the same every week even while on vacation, because you're paying for the week--they're just different between the two families, just as they are for a normal week when both kids are there. The difference really only comes into play when our nanny is taking time off--then she might use nine hours of vacation with one family but only eight with the other, because it's a nine-hour day for one family but an eight-hour day for the other. But since she's also accruing the vacation time at those rates, it all works itself out. Hope that makes sense! Short answer--checks are always the same. |
