I'm a 20 year old resident of the Brookland neighborhood of DC. A woman contacted me asking if I could babysit her 4y/o daughter and 8y/o son for the three weeks leading up to the start of school. When I initially interviewed with the family, I thought I heard her say $125 a day, and I thought that was reasonable and generous. I did a trial day on Thursday to get a feel for the kids and the family, and decided to accept the job. I emailed the woman Thursday night after the "trial" day to make sure we were on the same page about pay and hours, and the woman says that she absolutely cannot pay me $125 a day and said $125 a week. I usually charge $12 an hour for one kid because I'm almost 21 years old and I am a very experienced babysitter. I'm also very engaged with the children and do my best not to plop them down in front of a television for hours on end. Since there are two children involved, I just added another 3 dollars on to my regular rate (bumping it up to $15). I feel like $125 a week for five eight hour days is ridiculous. $15*8hrs=$120 per day, which I think is fair and reasonable. $125 a week is $25 a day, and a little more than $3 an hour. Am I being unreasonable with my expectations? How do I talk about these rates with this woman and what might be a good medium?

Please help!
Thank you!

Your rate is perfectly reasonable. $125 for 40 hours a week is only a little over $3/hr. That's below minimum wage and illegal. Do not take this job!

DO NOT TAKE THAT JOB!

Run - run fast. And email her back letting her know that the federal minimum wage is $7.25 so paying less than that is illegal. Also, your minimum for 2 children is $15 per hour so you unfortunately cannot accept the position after all.

MB here - I never understand questions like this. It's always fine to say, that's not the rate we agreed on and is much lower than my regular rate of $15/hr. Happy to do it for $15/hr. Otherwise I will look for something else. Done.

Agreed. OP, why do you need to even ask for advice?

$12 an hour for your age/experience is reasonable. $125 a week is unreasonable but she may only be making that much too and cannot afford it. Clearly it is not the right job for you, move on.

What is the lowest you will accept? If it is 12 or 15 ? Just tell her my rate is ? She can accept or decline. But don't waste your time with 3 per hr that's crazy

Why is this even a question?

Min wage in dc is $9.50 an hour.

She is trying to get prime rib for the price of a Big Mac.

In other words, she is trying to get the luxury of a private nanny for what she pays for a daycare.

Not happenin'......

Let her go, move on and find another position.

This one just won't work out.
