In the last few years my body has changed a lot, particularly since I crossed the threshold of 30. I take my charge out every day to the park and on walks but low impact exercise is not very effective. We run plenty kicking the soccer ball but he is still young so were talking about two feet of running at the most. After working 11 hours I head home to take care of dinner and the day is over.
I would like to do some exercise during nap times. Specifically, body weight exercises or yoga routines that don't require any gear. My concern is, would it be too strange to workout in NF's home? |
| I work out during nap time every day. I do yoga, and other body wieght exercises, and my employers have a stationary bike that I can use as well. I don't think its strange at all, and it keeps me revved up for the afternoon. |
| No, I wouldn't. It doesn't feel professional to me. I get up at an ungodly hour and work out before I shower/dress and go to work. |
A lot of workplaces have a gym as part of their facilities. People who workout regularly tend to be healthier overall and have more energy, which is good for employers. |
Those workplaces are not someone else's home. They are large offices with separate gyms and the workers are off - they can leave the building if they chose on their lunch hour - not true for nannies. We are still working during our charges nap times and we are in someone's home. Feels creepy and unprofessional to me. Work out before you get ready for work. |
| Yeah, I wouldn't do it either. |

I worked out at my previous nanny job. They had a workout room in their finished basement with a super high quality elliptical and always told
Me to feel free to use it during nap time. Once the baby and 2 year old were on the same afternoon nap schedule, I'd spend 45 minutes on the elliptical. I also would use it on my super late nights once the kids went to bed. I'd just keep the monitor next to me at all times. |
You take a break to eat your lunch and decompress during nap time, I assume? I'm not sure how me choosing to use that time to do yoga, while still being available to the children, is any different. My charge's take a nearly three hour nap in the afternoon. Its plenty of time for me to eat, do any tasks I have to do, get in a workout, and jump in the shower. It works for us. |

We found out through the nanny cam that's what our manny is doing during naps. Better he do pushups and crunches than be snooping through our things.
It's fine. |
HEY GUYS, HER NANNY HAS A PENIS! |
|
It all depends on what type of working out and where you want to do it.
And most important, how much attention it would draw away from your charge. Because even though he will be napping, as everyone knows, naps are never guaranteed so you will always have to have a third ear ready should he wake up for any reason. That being said, you cannot be too distracted by a DVD and you cannot wear music headphones nor play loud music to exercise to. And you must be reasonably close to where he is napping at. |
| I'm with the nannies who think it's not cool to workout in your employer's house. It's their home not mine. And I actually don't take a lunch hour - I eat with the kids and work during their naps. |
Actually, no - I don't take a break to eat my lunch, I eat with the kids and my charges never take three hour naps! (Wow - I wish they did!) I have an hour and a half while my charges nap to do other related chores. But again, I wouldn't workout during that time if they did sleep for three hours. |
| I'm a nanny and I think it's fine. The family I currently work for had said its fine if I want to use their workout equipment / dvds and I have a few times (probably should more regularly). I think that as long as you finish any chores your responsible for and prepared to be there for your charge at any time, it shouldn't be a problem. I guess at the end f the day, you just have to feel out your NF. If they are the type that want a very professional type nanny, then maybe not, however if they are more relaxed and have a laid back relationship with you then I don't see a problem with it. |
Why do people always call out MBs who mention their manny? Is it just the name that's offensive? I would assume that if they hire a make nanny, most if them would know is he is or isn't offended by the term. And, in this post particularly, I don't feel like the MB is bragging that her nanny is a male. I just don't understand why these MBs get so much snark. |
