Mannys: do you say thank you to your employer? RSS feed

Anonymous
I work for a family that I absolutely love. The kids are adorable, the pay is good, and the parents are respectful and considerate. Every day when I leave, my MB or DB will say "thank you." I always just wish them a pleasant evening. I was thinking today that I could just as easily say thank you back. I am so grateful to have them in my life! Do you say thank you on a regular basis? Or do you try to show your appreciation by going above and beyond and by doing special things for holidays (e.g., Mother's Day, birthdays, etc.)?

We always say "thank you" to each other.

Thank you goes along way in any relationship. OP, are you a male nanny, or was manny in the header a misprint? Just interested in your experiences as a male in a female dominated field if that is indeed the case.

My families always say "Thank You" as well and I simply respond "You're Welcome." To say "Thank You" back would be too weird to me.

However, I always say "Thank You" when they hand me my check.

This is just me though.

It's a personal choice.

OP here. I am a female nanny who can't type.

My employers never hand me a check, just place it on the counter. I generally say "Thanks" if they mention it's there, but it's more "thanks for letting me know" vs. "Thanks for employing me."

My family says thanks most days when I leave, and I generally reply with "you're welcome" or "have a good evening". They're thanking me for doing a good job with their child - I don't feel like I have anything to thank them for in that context.

I always say thank you when MB points out my paycheck, however. That's when it feels appropriate. I also wrote them a nice message in their xmas card stating how thankful I was to be working for them.
