What is an acceptable rate in NOVA for a nanny for one child? PRE-tax and after tax? I am confused if the $15/hr is supposed to be before or after taxes?
I appreciate the input. |
| always, always, always negotiate with pre-tax rates. You have no idea what deductions the nanny will take, and it is hard to "know" what the after tax rate will be. |
| You mean a babysitter, right? |
|
Always speak about wages in gross. When you negotiate for a new job, do your employers make the offer in gross or net wages?
Do the above and be sure to outline it in writing to the candidates so you know everyone is on the same page. Acceptable rates are in the $15-$20/hour range with most really superb, experienced nannies being in the $17-$19/hour range -- however, that varies depending on a variety of factors including the total number of weekly hours. Can you give us more details? |
Zero data to support her claims, of course. |
| What are your standards of performance, OP? |
Then why don't you offer something different with data to back you up, of course. Oh, maybe that's because you can't. |
| A lot of this depends on the nanny's experience. If the nanny only has a couple of years experience, then $12-13 an hour would be ok, but if we are talking 20 years experience, then you should expect to pay $20 and up per hour. |
I'm sorry, what sort of data are you looking for? I speak from experience. The norm is $15-$20/hour, with 15 and 20 being outliers. Of course, people talk about nanny wages in all kinds of ways -- some people might quote 17/hour and mean it as an "average" rate so the base rate is actually lower. Some people (unfortunately) talk about wages in net terms, etc. |
It is not clear to me why you have gotten so defensive of my "claims" but here are details about the last few jobs I am aware of that were offered to a nanny and accepted. These are all in Arlington, Alexandria and McLean. -$16/hour for 40 hours, plus $24/hour for 12 OT hours for a weekly total of $928 -$17/hour for 40 hours, plus $25.50/hour for 12 OT hours for a weekly total of $986 -$20/hour for 40 hours for a total of $800 $19/hour for 40 hours plus $28.50/hour for 5 OT hours for a weekly total of $902.50 -$19/hour for 40 hours plus $28.50/hour for an average of 10 OT hours per week, for an average weekly total of $1045 -another like the first, with $16/hour for 40 hours plus $24/hour for 12 OT hours for a weekly total of $928 |
I think we all need to ignore the PP who wants the "data." She's either someone looking to just stir up drama or she is a nanny without many skills who wants to make more than she is actually worth. She tries to claim all nannies should make more than anyone ever says they pay. If everyone paid the $30/hr she claims nannies should then she'd probably price herself right out of a job. If she is actually worth that then she shouldn't have any problem finding a job making that and she wouldn't care what people say they pay on here. |

Yes I mean experienced nanny, for 40 hrs a week.
Thank you for all your responses. |
| For one child, $15-17/hr pretax. |
