Our back up child care service through my work includes an in-home care option. This means that the back-up services arranges with local nanny agency to send a temp nanny to your house. All payments are sent to the back-up service. In this situation -- where you are not actually handing the nanny any money but just signing a slip of paper -- would you be expected to also slide her a gratuity? |
Do you know how much of the money she actually receives? If the service is taking a significant cut, and you aren't comfortable with the hourly wage she is getting, I could see giving her a tip. I don't think its expected, or necessary. |
I don't think it's standard however, if she's good and you wanna tip i'm sure she wouldn't mind, lol. |
I have a service like that through work, and never tipped the various nannies. I always tip very well in restaurant and other places where it is expected, but I thought it would be offensive to tip the nanny. When I used the in home service I always thanked them and gave them a great review though |
As a nanny I would NOT be offended by someone giving me a tip! ![]() |
Side note: Do you tip delivery guys, for furniture? |
You tip anyone who performs a service for you. Delivery people of any kind, hair stylists, hotel housekeeping, baristas, and yes, even nannies (especially ones who aren't regular and are helping you when you are in a bind). |
No, I don't tip everyone you performs a service for me. If I did, I'd be tipping my lawyer and accountant. That would be weird.

I don't know exactly how the assignment system works at the agency, but I imagine that if you tip and otherwise treat the temp nanny well, she'll be more eager to come back to you the next time they need to send someone over. |
