We would like to hire a nanny for our toddler for $800 per week for 45 hours (so that's $16.85/hr plus OT). Toddler is an easy boy who still naps 2-3 hours. Light kid-related chores only (dishes in dishwasher, empty diaper pail, tidy toys at end of day). This is in dc. Does this sound like at around the going rates?

800 cash or with taxes taken out?

Yes.

Yes, it is a good gross rate for a legal, on the books nanny.

You could probably go a little lower (I'm a nanny)

Its definitely a reasonable offer though you could even start at $15 an hour and find some great candidates Also consider what paid holidays you'll offer, how much vacation time, whether you're willing to contribute towards her healthcare, and a snow day policy. Then put it all into a contract when you hire someone. Good luck!

Great Deal for a legal nanny. Someone who has an education and who has experience. I'd take if if I didn't already have a job.

I thought nannies got $800 per week for 40 hours?
This after interviewing candidates in close in VA suburbs

Its a good rate OP. I will never understand nannies advocating for other nannies to be paid less. If you can afford it, and a annual raise/bonus for the next few years, your rate is good and will attract good candidates. $17/hour in DC is about average. $15/hour is acceptable in the suburbs.

Very few nannies get $20 per hour unless they are working with a two-family share.

$17 for one toddler is actually on the high end in DC. A very experienced nanny working with one child could command that rate. Nannies with fewer than five years experience are more likely to start at $15, unless they are working with more than one child. From there, the rate would typically increase a bit each year and with the birth of any subsequent children.
