Advice on hourly rates for 1 or 2 children

What is the going rate for 1 child with a full time nanny?
What is the going rate for 2 children with full time nanny - same family?
What is the going rate for 2 children with a full time nanny - nanny share similar age?

Are these the gross rates or net pay after tax? My nanny wants a certain amount each week in net pay but that puts the gross hourly rate really high. I want to be able to talk to her about the going hourly rates in the Bethesda/Potomac areas so any advice you have would be much appreciated.

It depends on hours, expectations and experience. There's not one definitive hourly rate for childcare anywhere.

My opinion:

Minimum for FT 1 child - $15
Miminum for FT 2 children- $17
Minimum for nanny share- $16-20

I agree with these minimum guidelines as well, and you should always negotiate in gross.

I agree with these minimum guidelines as well, and you should always negotiate in gross.

I agree that these are your basic "no frills" rates. You should get lots of "warm body" applicants. It would, however, only be fair to you to mention that some top nannies earn $25-30/hr. in the DC area. Of course there are very few of these elite level nannies who command that high range. It depends on what you want and can afford.

PP those rates will get you more than a warm body, but OP if you find your nanny fantastic and feel like she is very qualified then you could look at the numbers the PP gave and add two or three dollars on.

1 child= 17 an hour
2 children= 19 an hour
2 child nanny share= 18-22 an hour
If you've already hired her at a certain rate and she wants more, you may have to look for a new nanny I you're not on the same page.

No. Those are average rates in DC. Very few nannies make $25+/hr in DC, so few that they don't skew the average for experienced, skilled nannies over $15/hr. In fact, most of us don't know a single nanny earning that salary outside of the self reporting, inflating rate nannies here. Ask any agency, at any park, among you friends, OP. No one in real life is paying over $25/hr unless their nanny is watching triplets or in a share.

It's quite insulting that you suggest that the vast majority of nannies in DC are merely "warm bodies", PP. Both insulting and incorrect. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I hate to burst your bubble, but I make $25 an hour. But then, I'm not your average warm body nanny. I have over 20 years experience, work for a very demanding family and I am great at my job.
