So I have guaranteed hours each week and last week after moving my days around three times, my employers decide to use a date night instead of one of my full 7 hour days. When I get there the dad thanks me for changing my schedule around for them and then says I will still get payed my full amount that week even though they probably wouldn't use all the hours. I think this is completely fair since I made myself available to them and was very flexible. Well Friday comes around and the mom hands me my full paycheck and then says they decided they wanted to save those three leftover hours and use them at a later date. I immediately told her I did not want them to start banking hours and that I would rather just have the 3 hours subtracted from my paycheck. I just didn't want to owe them anything. She seemed really annoyed and said she didn't feel like writing me a new check because they would have to re figure the taxes, then she said to just forget about it. Am I in the wrong here?

I'm an MB. To me, "guaranteed weekly hours" means that if I have you schedule M-F 8am to 5pm and I get home at 4pm one day, I'm still paying you for that hour. It doesn't mean to me that I can schedule you for 45 hours any time I like. It would be lovely if you would be flexible once in a while, and say, provide babysitting in the evening instead on a day that I didn't need you to work. But I most certainly would not expect it. I also wouldn't assume that I could bank hours week to week.

Was your agreement guaranteed weekly hours or just generally guaranteed hours or what? I think it sounds like you definitely need to have a clarification discussion on what that means.

My contract states that hours may change during the summer but will remain at a minimum of 30hrs/week.

I hate banking hours and feeling like I owed, so definitely would be annoyed as well.

She changed the terms and she shouldn't have done that. I would have a chat to reiterate the guaranteed hours.

Isn't it annoying when emloyers try to switch the rules and they put you in the awkward position to speak up and then have the nerve to acted annoyed or angry. Ugh!

OP you did the right thing. If I were you I would have pointed to the contract instead of giving her the opportunity to subtract the hours.

I don't get it. It's 3 hours.. Is it really worth it to these cheap/selfish people try and nickel and dime?

Wait...your contract states that the hours may change. The hours can change per your contract and its silent on banking. If you want to extend your benefits then you'll need to renegotiate.
